Comair last month said it would ground 14 of its 50-seat Bombardier CRJs by the end of the year in step with a plan by parent company Delta Air Lines to cut its domestic capacity by 5 percent. The move will see the Cincinnati-based regional’s CRJ200 fleet shrink from 100 to 86 and its total complement of airplanes cut from 131 to 117.

The fabric of the air transport security blanket known as the Essential Air Service (EAS) program has frayed once again with the January 7 contraction of Big Sky Airlines–the now former lone link to the nation’s air trans- portation system for Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Jackson, Tenn.; Owensboro, Ky.; and no fewer than five communities in upstate New York.

The relationship between Pinnacle Airlines and its pilot group turned from frosty to malevolent last month as the Memphis-based regional filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). Pinnacle claims that bad-faith bargaining on the part of ALPA has unnecessarily stalled negotiations and resulted in the loss of 17 of its 50-seat jets and a chance to fly 76-seat jets for Northwest Airlines.
