The new owners of Hawker Beechcraft are starting on a high note. The company announced greatly improved first-quarter earnings last month, with net sales in the first quarter of this year up 32.3 percent from the same period a year ago, to $667.8 million. Hawker Beechcraft delivered 60 turbine aircraft in the first three months of this year, placing it second overall in terms of units shipped.

American pilots Joseph Lepore and Jan Paladino were indicted last month for their alleged part in the collision of their Embraer Legacy with a Gol Airlines Boeing 737 over the Amazon jungle last September in which all aboard the airliner died. The judge in the case agreed to proceed with the prosecutor’s suggested indictment, officially charging the pilots with unintentional endangerment of an aircraft through negligence.
The Falcon 2000DX made its first flight late last month with little fanfare. The aircraft is essentially a shorter-range version of the company’s popular 2000EX (3,250 nm versus the 2000EX’s 3,800 nm). According to Dassault, the new 2000DX will excel in time to climb–17 minutes to 41,000 feet. After a short flight-test program, the aircraft is expected to be certified by the end of the year.
Since March, Boston-bound business travelers have enjoyed Logan International Airport’s first modern FBO in many years, the new Signature Flight Support facility, which held a grand-opening ceremony on June 22. The $13 million FBO was built to environmentally sound standards, and Signature is applying for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Aerion, the U.S. company seeking to attract risk-sharing partners for a proposed supersonic business jet, has announced a number of design changes that it said are necessary to achieve weight and performance targets. The Mach 1.8 airplane’s forward fuselage has been reshaped to provide a slightly raised cockpit, larger cabin and reduced drag. Cabin height and width have grown slightly, as has the width of the cabin floor.
NetJets put some more distance between itself and mere market mortals at the Paris Air Show last month with an order for 96 new Cessna Citations valued at more than $1 billion.
Dassault Aviation and Rolls-Royce are teaming in a partnership that stands to boost Rolls-Royce’s 34-percent market share in the business jet sector.
Dassault Aviation chairman and CEO Charles Edelstenne announced last month that Dassault has selected the in-development Rolls-Royce 10,000-pound-thrust-class RB.282-31 engine to power its new super-midsize business jet.
Eurocopter is investigating all-electric helicopter system architectures, including flight controls, with the goal of having them in service within 10 years. The Marignane, France-based manufacturer clearly intends to substitute electricity for current sources of energy for systems, such as hydraulics. The change is likely to result in lower maintenance costs and improved handling qualities.

Two years after it announced the launch of its Phenom 100 very light jet program (at EBACE 2005), Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer celebrated the rollout of the first aircraft on June 16 at its São Jose dos Campos headquarters. After rollout, the production conforming twinjet went to the paint shop and from there it was to begin ground tests in preparation for first flight this month.
