Aviation services provider FlightLevel Aviation has signed a five-year lease to run the lone FBO at Cape May County Airport in Wildwood, N.J. The Delaware River and Bay Authority, which owns and manages the airport, ran the FBO on a limited basis for nearly a year after the departure of Big Sky Aviation in 2011. “A quality FBO is critical to an airport because it’s the first thing residents and visitors see when they arrive,” said airport director Steve Williams.

With its acquisition of Jet Aviation’s London Biggin Hill maintenance facility early this year, the 328 Group, which supports the worldwide fleet of Dornier 328 turboprops and jets among others, also acquired the former Jet Aviation FBO, which it is operating under its newly established Jets brand.

As part of a growing suite of noise- and pollution-control measures, France’s Nice Cote D’ Azur Airport will invest in the installation of a new underground power system that will reduce business jets’ dependency on auxiliary power units on the ramp. The system, the first of its kind in Europe, provides hatches under each aircraft engine start-up stand for access to a centralized power and heating/cooling system, greatly reducing the number of APU operation hours, as well as reducing exhaust emissions. The $2.7 million project is expected to begin this summer.

Bombardier delivered the first of 20 Q400 turboprops ordered by Calgary-based low-fare carrier WestJet on June 6. Plans called for WestJet’s new regional subsidiary, WestJet Encore, to start flying the airplanes on June 24 on new routes to Fort St. John and Nanaimo, British Columbia. The airline also plans to launch service to Brandon, Manitoba, on September 3, and open several new points in Alberta and Saskatchewan later in the year.

Bombardier has proposed establishing 850-hour intervals for CSeries aircraft line maintenance checks (A Checks) and 8,500-hour intervals for the new airliner’s base maintenance checks (C Checks), the manufacturer announced at its May 28 European Regional Review in Munich, Germany. Engaged in developing a CSeries maintenance program based on Maintenance Steering Group 3 (MSG-3) since October 2010, Bombardier claims the “longer” intervals will minimize downtime and result in “more competitive” maintenance costs for operators.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) granted ATR 120-minute Etops certification of its new -600 series turboprops last month. This Etops (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) certification means that the ATR 42-600 and ATR 72-600 versions can now fly as far as 120 minutes (on one engine) from any airport at which they can land.

Among the benefits of the SafeRoute suite of NextGen avionics applications is the implementation of optimized profile descents, which save fuel and reduce emissions.

US Airways recently became the first airline to receive FAA certification approval of the SafeRoute suite of NextGen avionics applications in the Airbus A330. The airline claims SafeRoute will “enhance operational safety and efficiency during various phases of flight.”

Rockwell Collins and Piaggio announced an upgrade program for the Piaggio Avanti twin turboprop. The program, available from Ruag Aviation, allows operators to upgrade their Pro Line 4 avionics to Pro Line 21. The Pro Line 21 P180 cockpit will be equipped with three or four 10-inch by 8-inch LCDs and Rockwell Collins’s Integrated Flight Information System, plus a new FMS and GPS-4000 that enables Waas LPV and space-based augmentation system with vertical guidance approaches.
