Cockpit voice recordings leaked late last month from the Embraer Legacy that collided with the Gol Airlines 737 over the Amazon last September indicate that the two business-jet pilots were very much aware of their position and altitude, despite earlier reports to the contrary. The transcript shows the Legacy crew correctly checked in at their assigned altitude of FL370, which was confirmed by ATC.
Eclipse Aviation’s announcement of a 180-airplane order at EBACE signaled the launch of a very light jet (VLJ) air-taxi operation that will be based in Turkey. The order was placed by Eclipse Eastern European distributor Etirc Aviation, which will also be responsible for helping Eclipse obtain Turkish certification of the Model 500.
The FAA said last month that this summer it will greatly expand the airspace flow program (AFP), an initiative it implemented last summer to better manage airline delays associated with summer thunderstorms. In all, seven combinations were available for use last year, mainly to meter the flow of traffic to the Northeast. This year operators can expect 18 separate geographic possibilities when the program expands to the Midwest.
The growing Encore FBO chain on May 18 added a seventh FBO, the former Frederick Aviation at Frederick Airport in Maryland. This is Encore’s fourth U.S. FBO and second purchase of an FBO with a business jet charter operation and maintenance/avionics facilities.
Hawker Beechcraft hopes to continue to stave off competition from VLJs with two new upgrades–announced last month at EBACE–to the stalwart King Air turboprop line. The upgraded King Air B200, which the company is calling the B200GT, gets more powerful PT6A-52 engines, while the C90GTi will be equipped with Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics as standard.
The newly formed Hawker Beechcraft announced its first fleet sale at EBACE in Geneva last month. NetJets Europe signed a contract for the purchase of 32 Hawker 4000 super-midsize jets. Deliveries of the aircraft are expected to begin next year and continue through 2016. The value of the contract, which includes maintenance, is more than $700 million.
Embraer has selected the CAE Burgess Hill, UK training center as the European training location for the Phenom 100 VLJ and Phenom 300 light jet. CAE will provide instruction in its Simfinity training devices, which use the same simulation software as the CAE full flight simulators. Training will begin in 2009 to coincide with the first projected Phenom 100 delivery in Europe.
Cessna expanded its relationship with Rockwell Collins last month when it announced the avionics maker will provide the digital cabin management system for the new CJ4. Not often seen in the light jet market, the system will include high-definition video and audio. In addition, the Airshow moving map will be offered as well.
Charter safety auditors CharterX and Wyvern announced a new product last month aimed at ensuring customers receive the most up-to-date safety information available for each flight.
