Cessna 208, Frederick, Md., April 21, 2009–While taxiing after landing, the pilot of the Caravan owned by Greystoke Engineering reported the engine spooling down after a “pop” sound was heard. He then saw smoke coming from the engine compartment and requested assistance. The airport line crew extinguished the fire, but not before it had extensively damaged the fuselage.

Hawker Beechcraft King Air B200, Fort Myers, Fla. April 12, 2009–The Beech King Air B200, registered to White Equipment Leasing, was landed by a passenger who was not rated in the B200, after the pilot became ill shortly after takeoff from Marco Island Airport (Fla.).
Aviation will become greener in small steps rather than the giant leaps hoped
Europe’s aerospace industry is blaming the European Commission for major delays in the Clean Sky joint technology initiative (JTI), a significant aerospace research program for greener aviation. The Commission retorts that it is just doing its job–spending taxpayer money diligently–and declines to accept sole responsibility for the delays.

The Teal Group’s 19th annual Business Jet Overview indicates that business aircraft have been hit harder by the economic crisis than any other aerospace market. According to Teal, business jet deliveries “won’t see a recovery to the 2008 peak level for many years to come.” New business jet deliveries won’t start to recover until 2012, it said, with 2011 predicted to be a trough year in which deliveries are 40 percent below last year’s.
The flow of used aircraft to the market is slowing fairly dramatically, and some may wonder if that’s because all the aircraft for sale are already on the market. It might seem that way to some, but the more than 3,000 aircraft for sale right now–while not an insignificant number–represent only a fraction of the more than 16,500 jets currently in operation.
