Acceding to community noise complaints, New York helitour operators and officials from the city’s Economic Development Corporation have agreed on a new set of operating rules that will significantly curtail the volume, frequency and geographic area of permissible sightseeing flights. Four- to eight-minute flights, the current mainstay of the Manhattan-area air-tour business, are now banned.

At 10 p.m. on April 20, seven minutes after the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig exploded, the search-and-rescue alarm went off at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Training Center in Mobile, Ala. Pilot Lt. Andy Greenwood and his crew headed for their HC-144 Ocean Sentry, a CASA CN-235 twin turboprop, for the 115-mile flight. “We were at 4,000 feet when we hit the Gulf, and we could already see the fire,” Greenwood said.

About 50 hours of test flying remains before Rockwell Collins will submit the certification paperwork to the FAA for its Pro Line Fusion integrated cockpit, which will serve as the baseline avionics system for Gulfstream’s G250 and Bombardier’s Global Express XRS and Global 5000 when approvals are completed next year.

Arinc has become a distribution partner (DP) for Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband satellite communication services, allowing it to buy and resell airtime directly. According to the company, its new position as a SwiftBroadband wholesaler, which took effect April 1, will better enable it to offer tailored communications solutions to aircraft operators.
