If there was any doubt that hundreds of safety-minded aviation professionals were in attendance during the second day of the 56th Annual Corporate Aviation Safety Seminar (Cass) on April 21, that doubt was dispelled when the fire alarm sounded. Air Canada launched the first direct competition against Bombardier Q400 operator Porter Airlines out of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport on May 1, when the flag carrier’s new regional subsidiary, Sky Regional Airlines, began service between the downtown Toronto airfield and Montreal. Flying under the new Air Canada Express brand, Sky Regional operates hourly Q400 service up to 15 times daily, between 7:30 a.m.

If the business aviation industry is experiencing a recovery, it is by most indications a stumbling affair, with new markets leading the way.
In early May, JPMorgan described business aviation’s progress toward a recovery as “uneven.” In its May Business Jet Monthly report, the firm took note of a “post-recession low” in the inventory of used jets for sale, but also an overall drop in used aircraft prices.
Looking forward to a continued recovery, Bombardier Aerospace released its annual Aircraft Market Forecasts on May 18, predicting 24,000 business aircraft deliveries from 2011 to 2030 and market-wide revenues of $626 billion.
Eurocopter broke ground early last month in Donauwörth, Germany for a new integrated development center, due to be completed next year. The 320,000-sq ft building will be adjacent to the existing helicopter factory. It will employ about 900 people, including those who will relocate from the Ottobrunn site.
