B/E Aerospace has received an STC for after-market installation of direct and indirect LED lighting in the Cessna Citation 500 series. The Citation 500 STC is the latest step in the certification of the company’s LED system. The company has already provided LED lighting for installation in more than 50 aircraft, including Boeing Business Jets, Challengers, Falcons, Gulfstreams, Merlins and Sabreliners.

The CTT Systems Zonal Comfort System has been ordered by Jet Aviation for a Boeing 767-300ER and is being installed as part of a major executive interior completion project by Jet Aviation’s Basel, Switzerland facility. The Swedish-built system is designed to maintain a 20-percent humidity level throughout the entire cabin without causing damaging “rain in the plane” condensation between the cabin walls and aircraft skin.

Last June Bell/Agusta completed initial testing of its BA609 civil tiltrotor at Bell’s Fort Worth, Texas flight-test center. At the time, project test pilot Roy Hopkins said he was particularly impressed by the tiltrotor’s handling qualities. Over nine flights of the BA609, Hopkins, accompanied by flight test pilot Dwayne Williams, logged 14 hours in helicopter mode.

Jean Ross Howard Phelan, a pioneering airplane and helicopter pilot, died early last month at the age of 87. During World War II she helped aviation legend Jackie Cochran run a base for the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). She learned to fly under the Civilian Pilot Training program (which later banned women from its ranks) and, in 1954, became only the eighth woman in the U.S. to get her helicopter rating.

Bristow Helicopters has ordered two Eurocopter EC 225s, with a scheduled service entry of spring next year. The order for this latest addition to the Super Puma family is valued at approximately E32 million ($40.3 million), and Bristow has options on an additional two aircraft.

A research program commissioned by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has produced findings that could lead to safer night landings on offshore helidecks. The results have been so impressive that the CAA, in conjunction with other authorities, submitted a proposal to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to amend current worldwide standards and practices for helideck and heliport lighting.

Rolls-Royce has introduced a new network of service centers that it claims offers “unprecedented” full-capability repair and overhaul (R&O) support to operators of its Model 250 engines. Twenty support specialists now form a worldwide service network that replaces what was known as the Model 250 authorized maintenance center (AMC) network.

Eurocopter’s new boss believes that last year’s good sales figures should not hide
the need for some changes in the company culture. Speaking to the press in Paris
on January 21, president and CEO Fabrice Brégier, 42, said the helicopter manufacturer’s customer service still needs improvement. However, “Eurocopter is now in working order, according to the new frame I have defined,” he stated.
