Aviation Communications and Surveillance Systems (ACSS) inked an agreement with Airbus to certify the Phoenix avionics maker’s T3CAS product in all Airbus single-aisle (A318/319/320/321) and long-range (A330/A340) airplanes. T3CAS is an integrated system that combines traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) with terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) capability and a mode-S transponder in a single line-replaceable unit.

Rockwell Collins last month gained an STC for its Pro Line 21 IDS (integrated display system) in King Air 200s equipped with SPZ-200 autopilots. Superior Aircraft Maintenance of Medford, Ore., performed the installation, replacing the twin turboprop’s panel with three 8- by 10-inch flat-panel displays, digital weather radar and Integrated Flight Information System (IFIS) server for viewing electronic charts, checklists and other information.
Universal Avionics last month said it received an STC allowing installations of the company’s line of WAAS-capable FMS units in the Bombardier Challenger 600, 601 and 601-3R. Universal’s line of WAAS-ready flight management systems includes the UNS-1Lw, UNS-1Ew, UNS-1Espw and UNS-1Fw.
Warning that the number of very light jets (VLJ) in European airspace is about to soar, Eurocontrol is considering a requirement for turbine-powered airplanes weighing less than 12,500 pounds to carry traffic alert and collision avoidance systems (TCAS). Officials say that adding VLJs into Europe’s increasingly crowded mix of airliners and large business jets could be a prescription for disaster.
The prospect of designing a supersonic business jet that meets market requirements and environmental noise constraints at a price that will attract buyers remains compelling, and research continues. The Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recently signed an agreement to research SSBJ sonic boom mitigation with Rolls-Royce Deutschland and Gulfstream Aerospace.
The FAA awarded certification to the King Air C90GTi on January 28, and Hawker Beechcraft has begun deliveries, so it’s time to remove the turboprop twin from the In The Works list. Replacing the C90GT, the GTi adds Rockwell Collins’ Pro Line 21 avionics suite, making the airplane the smallest player in the Hawker Beechcraft turbine lineup consistent with the Pro Line 21-equipped King Air B200GT and 350, Premier IA and Hawker 750 and 900XP.
The latest iteration of what was the Visionaire Vantage single-engine jet still has a pulse, although progress has slowed considerably. The twin-engine EV-20 design is now in the hands of engineering students at Iowa State University.
Grob has delayed certification of its all-composite SPn utility jet from the first quarter until the fourth quarter of this year. Meanwhile, the third flight-test aircraft left Grob’s headquarters in Tussen- hausen-Mattsies, Germany, on January 28 for three months of flight testing in Granada, Spain, at facilities managed by the Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial at the Spanish Ministry of Defence.
Cessna’s newest project, first unveiled as a concept airplane at NBAA 2006 and dubbed the Large Cabin jet, is now the biggest jet in the company’s lineup and called the Citation Columbus. The fuselage mockup of the airplane generated enough positive feedback for the board of directors of Textron (Cessna’s parent company) to give the program the go-ahead on January 23, so it’s time to add the jet to In The Works.
Atlantic Aero saw life in the fall of 1971, when a group of Greensboro, N.C. investors identified a need for an FBO on Piedmont Triad International Airport. The company began operations with a staff of 15 employees, 38 plane ports and two 10,000-sq-ft-hangars. It also retained John Godwin as a consultant to tap into his years of FBO management experience.
