Maintenance provider Swift Aviation Services, located at Norwood Memorial Airport (Mass.), suffered a roof cave-in of one of its hangars on February 2, evidently the result of the weight of accumulated snow exacerbated by freezing rain. The hangar appeared to be totaled and some of the six light airplanes and a helicopter that were inside when the roof collapsed were destroyed, according to observers on the scene.

Airbus Corporate Jets set a new record for bizliner deliveries last year. With a combined list-price value of $1.5 billion, the European airframer delivered 15 bizliners, including 13 examples of the A318 Elite/Airbus ACJ/A320 Prestige and two widebody A330/340s. The company also won new orders for eight bizliners last year, taking total orders to date beyond 170 aircraft. The new orders included seven A320-series aircraft and one A330/A340.
Certainly the news that there were no U.S. airline passenger fatalities in 2010 is cause for reflection and, yes, some self-congratulation by all those who made it possible. From airline and manufacturers’ boardrooms to the 10th floor of 800 Independence Avenue, congratulations are in order.
APP Jet Center has acquired the former Key Air FBO at Fort Pierce Airport in Florida, making it the lone aviation services provider on the field. The FBO offers jet-A and 100LL fuel, along with in-house avionics and maintenance and close proximity to U.S. Customs.
APP, which acquired the former Volo FBOs in 2009, also operates FBOs at Manassas, Va.; Sarasota Fla.; and Hayward, Calif.
Manufacturers of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may no longer have an excuse not to equip their aircraft with transponders, which should make at least one pilot happy. This pilot told AIN that he experienced a near-miss with a UAV while flying in the southwestern U.S.
Eurocopter is believed to be working on an improved EC145–possibly to be designated the EC146, if recent trademark filings are any clue–featuring a fenestron shrouded tail rotor and Fadec-controlled engines. Aircraft spotter photographs reveal the light twin is already in flight test. An industry source told AIN that customers have been clamoring for Fadec since the commercial launch of the EC145 program.
A pilot was arrested in Ozana, Texas, after he failed a field sobriety test and deputies found firearms and empty beer cans inside his Robinson R22. The officers were called to the scene by residents who saw the helicopter flying low and then land in a field next to a barbecue party.
Russia, and the former Soviet republics surrounding it, remains a massive land of opportunity for business aviation. At the same time, for Westerners at least, much of this opportunity seems to remain blocked by a web of mystifying and frustrating bureaucracy that can make it practically impossible to operate business aircraft cost-effectively.
The recent removal of the loophole that allowed aircraft owners to import aircraft into the European Union (EU) via the UK at a zero rate of value-added tax has prospective buyers scrambling for fiscally friendly alternatives. One option is for private operators to find a way to get registered for tax purposes under a commercial aircraft operatorπs certificate, but this could subject the operator to unfavorable scrutiny by the authorities.
The European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) is refocusing its lobbying efforts as it seeks to address regulatory inconsistencies not only between Western Europe and the emerging market in Eastern Europe, but also within Western Europe itself. At the same time, the group is pushing for greater regulatory harmonization between the rules governing commercial and non-commercial operations of business aircraft.
