The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) selected the Becker Avionics DVSC6100 digital audio and intercom system for the agency’s new Pilatus PC-12 Spectre fleet. The Spectre is a special-mission version of the PC-12 with a retractable sensor platform, nine-passenger utility interior and sensor operator’s console. The PC-12 is equipped with Honeywell’s Primus Apex flight deck, and the DVCS6100 replaces the Apex audio control system. The DVCS6100 serves as the audio control system not only for the pilots but also for the mission operator station in the cabin.

JetTech received an STC for installation of Garmin’s G600 avionics system in the Cessna Citation 500, 501, 550, 551 and S550. JetTech-approved Garmin dealers are eligible to install the G600 STC in customer aircraft. The JetTech G600 STC retains the jet’s existing RVSM system It also includes JetTech’s proprietary air data interface unit, according to JetTech founder and partner/manager Rob Irwin, allowing the aircraft’s RVSM solution to be displayed on pilot and copilot instruments.
Garmin received an STC for installation of the G500H helicopter avionics system in the Robinson R44. The installation requires a 10-hole instrument panel. For R44s with the seven- or nine-hole panel, a custom panel is available from Garmin, or customers can purchase one from Robinson. The G500H price is $24,995, and optional helicopter synthetic vision technology adds $8,000. The installation requires a $500 parts kit, and the custom Garmin instrument panel costs $4,500.
Organizers of the annual Aircraft Interiors Expo are gearing up for this year’s show in Hamburg, Germany, from March 27 to 29. They already have a roster of more than 500 exhibitors–aircraft manufacturers, cabin completion centers, vendors and suppliers. While the primary focus is on airline interiors, numerous companies exhibiting are equally well known in the business-aviation interiors industry, and the new technology introduced is frequently applicable as well to business and private jet cabins.
Operators flying in Europe can expect overall charges such as airspace and airport fees (including noise tariffs) to double when European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS) costs are added in for transatlantic flights. According to a preliminary report obtained last month by AIN from UK-based EU-ETS consultants SustainAvia, a U.S. Part 91 corporate flight department flying 15 round trips per year from New York JFK to Munich Airport in a Gulfstream G450 could pay nearly $35,000 annually in EU-ETS fees. That comes to more than $2,300 in extra costs per round trip to Europe.
Southeast Asia, rather than the behemoth economies of China and India, provided the bulk of the sales impetus for the 2012 Singapore Airshow. More specifically, it was from Singapore’s neighbor Indonesia that the latest wave of airline fleet modernization came when Lion Air confirmed a massive order for 201 of Boeing’s new 737Max-9 narrowbodies, plus 29 of the existing 737-900ERs.
When President Obama signed the four-year FAA reauthorization bill on February 14, he put an end to more than four years of foot-dragging and often contentious debate, along with a record 23 short-term extensions of the FAA’s operating authorization and ability to levy and collect aviation excise taxes, since the last four-year reauthorization expired in the fall of 2007.
Despite rising jubilation among the GPS community in the middle of last month that LightSquared had at last met its comeuppance, the would-be nationwide wireless broadband provider was not dead yet as this issue went to press. With its technical arguments virtually exhausted, LightSquared entered into a “Pleading Cycle” at the FCC on January 27, using what is likely its only lifeline.
With Congressional differences resolved, the FAA Reauthorization Bill has been signed by the President and is now a formal government act. A done deal, right? Well, perhaps not totally done. Those who read the October report of the FAA-sponsored Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) on implementation strategies for ADS-B in were certainly surprised to see that the bill called for in to be mandated in 2020, at the same time as ADS-B out.
On February 7, Hawker Beechcraft Inc. announced it had appointed Robert S. “Steve” Miller, 70, CEO and that former Hawker Beechcraft CEO Bill Boisture “will remain as chairman of its operating subsidiary, Hawker Beechcraft Corporation.” Miller said he plans to remain chairman of American International Group and a director at Symantec, although he left his job as chairman of MidOcean Partners.
