A Europe-wide proposed regulation, combined with a lack of response from national authorities, will have a serious impact on the financial viability of helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) in France, according to Union Française de l’Hélicoptère (UFH). The lobbying association warns that the likely requirement for a second flight crewmember would create a costly burden and do nothing to benefit the missions French HEMS operators are allowed to perform.

During a visit to Parker Aerospace’s Irvine, Calif., Control Systems Division recently, AIN took a tour through the fly-by-wire flight control systems integration laboratory and received briefing on modern flight control technology. Parker officials also provided information about the company’s work on the Embraer Legacy 450/500 program, which suffered a delay due to changes to the flight control system.
Embraer’s Legacy 450/500 program suffered a one-year delay, although the originally planned 3.5-year span to develop and certify a new airplane incorporating so much new technology might have been ambitious. The fly-by-wire (FBW) Legacy 500 will be first to enter service and is on track for certification in the second half of this year and entry into service by year-end or early next year, followed by the 450 about a year later.
Rizon Jet is considering legal action in its bid to overturn efforts by Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) to prevent it from providing handling for third-party operators at its Doha International Airport headquarters. The Qatari company has claimed that after supporting its 2011 investment of approximately $137 million in a new private terminal, the CAA then ordered it not to use this facility for third-party handling.

Last year general aviation reached a milestone of sorts, according to GAMA chairman Brad Mottier. For the first time, he noted, shipments to North American buyers in all three airplane segments–jets, turboprops and pistons–dipped to 50 percent.
This year’s Asian Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (ABACE), which will take place at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport from April 16 to 18, will once again bring together numerous parties who are hopeful that the business aviation market in this vast, fast-growing country will open up and boom. The event is a joint venture among NBAA, the Asian Business Aviation Association (AsBAA), Shanghai Exhibition Center and the Shanghai Airport Authority.
