Cessna has ruled out the addition of winglets to its Citation X high-speed business jet, after investigating the modification and concluding that there was not a sufficiently strong case for doing so. AIN had confirmed that the airframer had submitted an application with the FAA for certification of the winglets and that these were to have been fitted on production aircraft starting with S/N 222.

Mike Redenbaugh took over the CEO’s office at Bell Helicopter’s Fort Worth, Texas headquarters in May and now faces some formidable challenges–including getting the military V-22 tiltrotor program on track and completing certification of the BA609 civil tiltrotor in cooperation with partner Agusta Aerospace of Italy.
Bell Helicopter Textron announced the recent deliveries of three helicopters–a Bell 412, 206B-3 and 430–to customers in vastly different industries and took orders for two 407s in September. The Fort Worth, Texas-based manufacturer also inked a deal at the NBAA Convention in Orlando, Fla., last month on the sale of an AB139, jointly developed with AgustaWestland.
Amid feverish speculation that the 2005 show might be rattling around the mighty Excel exhibition centre in London’s docklands, this year’s Helitech, held in late September, rolled back its sleeves and got on with the job in hand. During a week of beautiful late-summer weather, the biennial event attracted more than 6,500 trade visitors and some 300 helicopters to Duxford Airfield.
A Bell 206L3 owned and operated by Petroleum Helicopters crashed on its way to an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico on October 10, killing the pilot and two passengers aboard.
Tom Macdonald, the Osprey V-22 chief test pilot, received the Iven C. Kincheloe Award from the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. The award, established in memory of Kincheloe, who died in 1958 in the course of flight-testing an F-104 Starfighter, is presented annually for outstanding flight-test accomplishments.
Robinson Helicopter delivered its first R22 piston single in October 1979. Exactly 24 years later, the Torrance, Calif. manufacturer delivered its 5,000th helicopter. This milestone represents the production of 3,489 R22s and 1,522 four-seat R44s. The 5,000th machine, an R44 Raven II, was shipped to National Airways, a Robinson dealer based in Lanseria, South Africa.
In separate ceremonies at last month’s NBAA Convention, Bell/Agusta announced the sale of a corporate AB139 to American International Group and Eurocopter revealed that the EC 120 on display was bought. The buyer of the EC 120 wasn’t disclosed, but the seller, insurance broker Lance Toland, immediately ordered a new EC 120, this one with air conditioning.
The fatal crash on September 20 of an American Eurocopter AStar operated by Las Vegas air-tour operator Sundance Helicopters killed all six of the rotorcraft’s passengers, as well as the helicopter’s pilot, Takashi Mezaki, 45. The single-turbine helicopter crashed and burst into flames in the Grand Canyon near Meadview, Ariz., about the same vicinity where another AStar–flown by Papillon Air Tours–crashed on Aug. 10, 2001, killing six people.
Keystone Helicopter of West Chester, Pa., signed a five-year nonexclusive contract with Sikorsky Aircraft to provide executive completions for the new S-92 medium-twin helicopter. The work will include custom design, certification and installation, as well as exterior painting. The first S-92 to get the Keystone VIP configuration is scheduled for completion in December, next year for delivery to a large Northeast corporate customer.
