Last month the Indian Government signed for five Embraer Legacy Executives for head-of-state use. Four of the twinjets, which are business-jet versions of the ERJ-135 regional airliner, will replace the BAE Systems Avro quad-jets operated by the Palam-based Air HQ Communication Squadron of the Indian Air Force, which transports the country’s president, vice president and prime minister, among other dignitaries.

Bombardier said its Learjet 45 replacement horizontal stabilizer actuator received FAA approval on September 10 and shipments started immediately at a rate of 16 per day. The company projected that parts for all 235 Learjet 45s worldwide will have been shipped by September 25.
A recent survey of fewer than 60 pilots on the state of the business aviation industry’s security measures is significantly flawed, NBAA asserts. The study, by Dallas-based Aviation Marketing Consultants (AMC), concluded that “flight departments consider themselves largely immune to acts of terrorism, vandalism or other criminal activities, and little has changed in terms of their day-to-day security procedures since 9/11.”
Business aircraft crews are being urged to ensure they are using true Mach numbers in all airspace where the Mach number technique (MNT) is applied for longitudinal separation. According to a bulletin from the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC), some pilots are unaware that their displays show uncorrected Mach numbers and will not therefore be conveying their true Mach speed to air traffic controllers.
In what is being hailed by general aviation as a landmark decision, the FAA has ruled that the ban on Stage 2 aircraft at Naples Municipal Airport (APF), Fla., is unlawful. But the Naples Airport Authority (NAA), which operates the airfield, plans to file an appeal in federal court.
China’s AVIC I announced a trio of orders for 35 ARJ21 regional jets during the Beijing Air Show last month. The largest of the three contracts–for 20 of the 70- to 90-passenger jets–came from Shenzhen Financial Leasing. The others involved a five-aircraft launch order from Shanghai Aviation Group and a 10-unit commitment from Shandong Airlines. AVIC I expects to fly the first prototype in 2006 and start deliveries by the end of 2007.
FAA data indicates that a very small number of ATC “operational errors” (a reduction in standard separation distances) occur in any given year (about 6.7 errors per one million operations, on average), but the General Accounting Office has little faith that the data is accurate.
XtraJet, a Santa Monica, Calif.,-based charter firm, has become the second operator to be sued by the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners for allegedly committing repeated violations of the noise restrictions at Van Nuys Airport. Earlier, the board filed a similar suit against Pacific Jet (AIN, August, page 79).
The FAA last month approved the first simulators for two business jets that received certification this summer: the ultra long-range Gulfstream 550 and the super-midsize Bombardier Challenger 300. The G550 sim, built by FlightSafety Simulation in Tulsa, Okla., was approved to FAA level-D standards and is located at FlightSafety’s learning center in Savannah, Ga., near the Gulfstream factory. Four pilots suing their former employer, Flight Options, for allegedly firing them for their union-organizing activities following the merger with Raytheon Travel Air last year (AIN, October 2002, page 74) filed a motion on September 22 in the Federal District Court in Cleveland for summary judgment against the fractional operator.
