While most business aviation travelers think of Teterboro or Westchester County Airport when flying to New York City, a third airport in the area makes a strong case to put its name into the conversation. Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip, N.Y., is less than an hour from Manhattan and its proximity a mile from the Long Island Expressway makes for convenient access to the Hamptons summer enclave at the eastern end of the island.

The European Helicopter Safety Team (Ehest) has published a “training leaflet” for single-pilot operations, in a bid to curb accidents stemming from poor decision-making. The document highlights common errors and suggests strategies to prevent a pilot from being caught in a fatal spiral of events after having chosen the wrong option.

FlightSafety International (FSI) began customer pilot training for the newly certified Gulfstream G650 on September 10 at its Savannah Gulfstream Learning Center. FSI has 16 pilots enrolled in the first class, which is expected to last three-and-a-half weeks and will be supported by two full-motion simulators, four graphical flight simulators (GFS), 14 pilot instructors and one center manager.

The FAA announced September 7 that it would launch an investigation into the Lee County, Fla. MedStar helicopter EMS program. MedStar is operated by the county’s Division of Public Safety and flies a Bell 430 and an MBB BO105. Lee County abruptly shuttered MedStar, at the time it said temporarily, August 21 and terminated its pilots and top managers following reports of operational deficiencies and billing irregularities; however, the program had been under strain since the Aug.

General Electric and Rolls-Royce tie for first place among turbofan manufacturers, each scoring an overall average of 8.0 for the quality of product support they provide their customers. Compared with last year, that score represented an improvement of 5 percent for GE and 1 percent for R-R.

Eurocopter hopes to establish a completion center for Ecureuil light helicopters in Tianjin, China, by next year to accelerate deliveries for Chinese customers.

The Eurocopter EC225 medium twin now has a traffic collision avoidance system (Tcas) II integrated into its autopilot, eliminating the need for pilot input in emergency avoidance maneuvers. The first such standard-equipped EC225 was delivered earlier this year. Offshore operator Bristow previously STC’d a Tcas II installation on the AS332 Super Puma; Eurocopter claims to go one step further, with more integration.

Riding a Brazilian economy that continues to grow, fractional ownership and aircraft management company Avantto is finding a ready market and looks forward to more of the same.

In less than two years, with the backing of Brazilian asset management and private equity firm Rio Bravo, Avantto has signed more than 350 customers and assembled a fleet of 24 jets and 23 helicopters.

According to founder and president Rogèrio Andrade, Avantto’s fractional business model fits the needs of the country’s expanding economy and growing dependence on aviation.

Helicopter EMS provider Air Evac Lifeteam has entered the third level of the FAA’s safety management system (SMS) voluntary pilot project. Air Evac has 110 bases in 15 states and has been enrolled in the pilot project since February 2010. Dave Hardin, Air Evac’s director of safety, characterizes the company’s participation in the pilot project as a “challenging, but beneficial, process in the interest of safety.” Air Evac is only the third Part 135 operator to progress beyond Level 2, according to the FAA.

Armavia’s first Superjet SSJ100 sat idle at Sukhoi Civil Aircraft’s maintenance and training center at the Ramenskoye Aerodrome in Zhukovsky near Moscow last month, as the manufacturer and the Armenian flag carrier remained locked in a financial dispute. A second SSJ100 originally scheduled for delivery to Armavia in June also remained in Zhukovsky, leaving Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (SCAC) in the unwelcome position of storage facilitator while it urged the airline to settle arrangements to resume operation of at least the original airplane.
