Royal Jordanian will be the Middle East launch customer for the GEnx engine to power its 787s when deliveries begin in 2010. The flagcarrier selected General Electric (Stand C410) as its powerplant provider last month. Earlier this year, Royal Jordanian was announced as a 787 customer for up to 16 of the new 787 long-haul airliners. It will be taking these through a mixture of purchase and lease packages.

Saab Systems (Stand W326) has developed a new software suite and integration platform that allows users to connect a wide variety of systems to a common network, without the need for expensive hard-coding and software integration. Known as WISE (widely integrated systems environment), the system has a number of applications but is particularly well-suited to military training involving differing platforms and services.
The Royal Saudi Air Force has chosen General Electric (Stand C410) to re-engine its Boeing F-15S fighters with the F110 powerplant. Deliveries of 65 of the F110-GE-129C engines are to begin in 2008. Including logistical support, the contract is valued at more than $300 million.
Avions de Transport Regional (ATR) announced early last month that it is launching -600 series versions of its ATR 42 and 72 twin turboprop regional airliners. The aircraft are to be “progressively introduced” during the second half of 2010.
Dr. Stefan Weingartner replaced Bernd Kessler as the president and CEO, commercial maintenance, of MTU Aero Engines (Stand W750) on November 1, following his nomination by MTU’s supervisory board on October 18. Kessler has left MTU to become the CEO of Switzerland-based aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul company SR Technics (Stand E500).

The European Union is about to launch a massive seven-year, ?1.6 billion ($2 billion) research program dubbed Clean Sky, which will include developing six demonstrators for greener technologies. The European Council of Ministers is expected to formally adopt the comprehensive project next month.

Although Turkey announced its selection of the AgustaWestland A129 for its tactical reconnaissance and attack helicopter program in March, it took until September 7 to finalize a contract whereby the Anglo-Italian rotorcraft maker will participate in Turkey’s ATAK program in partnership with prime contractor Tusas Aerospace Industries (TAI).
As part of Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways’ expanding “emiratization” program, an initial batch of 12 UAE national cadets started training in June at Mubadala’s Horizon International Flight Academy in Al Ain, 75 miles south of Dubai.
