Snecma Services has signed an engineering support contract with Morocco’s flag carrier Royal Air Maroc. The two companies already participate in a partnership under their Snecma Morocco Engine Services joint venture–a maintenance, repair and overhaul shop for the Boeing 737s’ CFM56-3 and -B engines.

Boeing subsidiary Alteon Training said it will build a 787 full-flight simulator for installation at its training center in Miami, Florida. Pilots primarily from Latin American airlines will start simulator sessions in March 2010. Before moving to Miami, the device will be put into use at Alteon’s Seattle training center. Alteon will also install 787 simulators in Tokyo, London, Shanghai, Singapore and Minneapolis.
Lockheed Martin Systems Integration has awarded Griffon Corporation subsidiary Telephonics a $71.5 million contract to develop an enhanced version of the APS-147 radar used in the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. Known as automatic radar periscope detection and discrimination (ARPDD), the program will install software and hardware improvements.
Lockheed Martin’s Pathfinder flight team began preparations this week to demonstrate the system to the U.S. Army in a developmental and limited-user evaluation. Pathfinder is a pilotage aid based on the M-TADS/PNVS used in the AH-64 Apache, but intended for cargo and utility aircraft. It gives pilots FLIR-based imagery on a helmet display for safer flight in reduced-vision environments, including brown-out conditions.

Northstar Aerospace (Hall 4 Stand C16b) recently won a value engineering achievement award from the U.S. Department of Defense for developing an innovative process to overhaul assembly covers for transmission housings used on the Boeing AH-64 Apache helicopter. The process is intended to save money, while also boosting mission capability.
Messier-Bugatti (Hall 4 Stand B12) is looking forward to seeing its all-electric braking system on the Boeing 787 when it makes its first flight in the fourth quarter of this year. According to François Tarel, the Safran group subsidiary’s vice president for wheels and brakes, the system received its “safety of flight” approval from Boeing last November, following a series of bench tests.
Complex materials, made of carbon fiber composites and a metal, are tricky to characterize. “We already know that titanium is a better match than aluminum with carbon fiber,” research coordinator Benoît Sagot-Duvauroux said. But now researchers are endeavoring to put numbers on corrosion and dilatation issues, for example. Simulation of real-world operating conditions is the key to success in this work.
