Paul Schweizer seems to have taken well to his unfamiliar role as an employee. Some five months after Sikorsky bought his company, Schweizer joked about having to answer to a boss for the first time in 22 years, but he seemed liberated by the prospect of tackling a backlog that had grown too big for his little company to handle.

During a Sunday morning press conference here at Heli-Expo, Eurocopter president Fabrice Bregier quietly announced a pending agreement with China to codevelop a new helicopter. Called the EC 175, the new 22,000-pound-gross-weight helicopter will be positioned between the EC 155 and the Super Puma to compete in the heavy-lift market.

Honeywell dove back into the civil helicopter business here at Heli-Expo with a series of initiatives it hopes will land it squarely among the major players in the turboshaft propulsion business. Of course, the biggest news came during a Saturday afternoon press conference, when Honeywell revealed that its new HTS900 turboshaft will power the Bell 407X.

Erickson Air-Crane will hand over a “new” S-64 Helitanker to Italy’s Corpo Forestale dello Stato (state forestry corps, or CFS) this morning at Booth No. 2829. The aircraft is the second of four for the CFS to be upgraded by the Central Point, Ore. company, which has owned the helicopter’s type certificate since 1992.

While small piston helicopters continue to dominate the initial training scene with their relatively simple designs and low cost of operation, pilots seeking recurrent or advanced training in larger and more expensive turbine helicopters are more likely than ever to be flying a simulator instead of the real thing, according to industry experts.
