Gulfstream has recruited company veteran Robert Cowart to be the new director of supersonic technology development. He most recently served as project engineer for the supersonic technology program. In his new position, Cowart is responsible for the development of advanced technology supporting quiet supersonic flight over land, with a principal focus on sonic boom suppression concepts.

Canada’s CAE announced last week that a Boeing 777 full-flight simulator (FFS) built for Delta Air Lines is the first to achieve level-D qualification under the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s new FAR Part 60 rule. At the end of May, the FAA implemented more standardized and stringent qualification requirements for initial and continuing use of flight simulation training devices (FSTD).

Last week Marshall Specialist Vehicles delivered a second ground control station shelter to BAE Systems Integrated Systems Technologies (Insyte) for use with the Herti unmanned air system. Marshall SV’s 14-foot shelter is sized for air deployment by the short-fuselage Hercules version, which can also transport the air vehicle.

Alenia Aermacchi’s first pre-production M-346 lead-in fighter trainer made its official maiden flight on July 7 with Aermacchi chief test pilot Olinto Cecconello at the controls. The jet, painted in “Finmeccanica red” in a nod to Alenia Aermacchi’s parent company, had made three previous flights, all occurring the week before the first official public flight pictured here.

Snecma Services has signed a three-year maintenance contract with privately-owned Bahrain Air to support the CFM56-5A engines that power the carrier’s fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft–which will number four by the end of the year.

The Art of Flight is the title of an exhibition of paintings produced by David Bent on show in Hall 4. The exhibition features original works including a major new painting commemorating the 90th anniversary of the RAF, the “Plane Tessellation” series based on aircraft shapes and the “Red Arrows Collection.” Bent’s prints are limited to a maximum of 50 each and signed by the artist.

Bell Helicopter on July 5 opened its new 38,000-square-foot Canadian supply center at Calgary International Airport in Canada. “Our alignment with the front runners in the Canadian airport business development market certainly lends itself to strong OEM representation for years to come,” said Colin Bartole, manager of the new center.

Elbit Systems has been awarded a contract valued at some $20 million to supply Hermes 450 UAV systems to an unnamed European country. The order specifies both air vehicles and complementary ground systems, for delivery next year.\
