“Second-quarter Gulfstream orders were the largest we’ve seen since the economic downturn began,” Jay Johnson, chairman of Gulfstream Aerospace parent company General Dynamics, said yesterday during an investor conference call. In the three-month period, Gulfstream’s backlog climbed $428 million to $18 billion, representing an 18- to 24-month supply for in-production large-cabin jets.

At EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., this week, Aspen Avionics and AvConnect unveiled “Connected Panel,” which allows pilots to use mobile devices to communicate with avionics systems. The new system’s hardware consists of the CG100 Connected Panel unit, which will be mounted behind the instrument panel. It has USB ports and Bluetooth connectivity and flash memory storage.

Australia-based GippsAero announced yesterday at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., that it will build a stretched turboprop derivative of its piston-powered GA8 Airvan, in addition to expanding its footprint in North America. Certified production of the GA10 turboprop single is expected to begin in 2013.

Avidyne announced this week at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., that it is joining the push into touchscreen avionics control with the launch of the IFD540 FMS/GPS/navcom system. The IFD540 is a plug-and-play replacement for the Garmin GNS530, slotting into the Garmin tray and taking up the same real estate on the panel.

Activity in the business aviation industry continues to grow, Dassault Aviation chairman Charles Edelstenne said today during the release of Dassault Falcon’s results for the first half of this year. Dassault’s order intake for new Falcons, minus cancellations, in the six-month period was 22 units, a considerable improvement over the net aircraft orders for only two jets in the first half of 2010.
