Pratt & Whitney’s EcoPower engine wash for the F117 turbofan is helping the worldwide C-17 fleet achieve an 85-percent mission-capable rate, despite the aircraft routinely operating in harsh conditions. EcoPower reduces fuel burn by 1.2 percent, as well as carbon dioxide emissions and exhaust gas temperature.

GE Aviation has signed two separate 10-year OnPoint engine service agreements with Delta Air Lines and Japan Airlines subsidiary J-Air. China’s Xi’an Aviation Science and Technology Company (XASC) has awarded Rockwell Collins a contract to develop a simulation and training program for the Xi’an Aircraft (XAC) MA-60 and MA-600 regional turboprops. Under the terms of the agreement, Rockwell Collins will use its CORE simulation architecture to supply key components of the MA-60 full-flight simulator and the MA-600 training device.

Bombardier Aerospace yesterday announced a new firm order for 15 CRJ1000s from Spanish regional carrier Air Nostrum. The Valencia-based Iberia Regional partner has now placed firm orders for a total of 35 CRJ1000s and has revealed itself as the previously unidentified launch customer for the 100-seat-class jet.

New engine orders slumped badly for CFM International during the first five months of this year. The French-U.S. partnership sold just 303 engines through May 31–less than a quarter of the (admittedly exceptional) total of 1,342 sold in the same period in 2008.

Dassault Aviation CEO Charles Edelstenne on Friday made it clear that all design choices for its next Falcon business jet, a super-midsize aircraft codenamed SMS, have been reopened–including the engine. During a press conference at the company’s headquarters in Saint-Cloud, near Paris, Edelstenne also commented on the tricky economic situation, saying further layoffs might be decided by year-end.

Louis Gallois would not fuel speculation about what caused the Air France A330 to crash into the Atlantic Ocean on June 1, but he did say that the replacement of pitot tubes had been instigated due to problems in takeoff and landing, not in cruise. This contradicts more than a week of speculation that a pitot tube failure may have been a major contributory factor to the accident.
