Satellite communications equipment manufacturer TrueNorth Avionics has received a U.S. Air Force contract to supply its Simphonï satcom systems for the government’s VIP transport fleet. The contract covers the installation of two-channel Iridium satcom systems in 40 C-37B aircraft (the military designation for the Gulfstream G550 and GV-SP) under the air force’s TARS (terrestrial aeronautical radiotelephone system) program.

Rockwell Collins said it has completed its $130 million purchase of satellite communication network designer DataPath in Duluth, Georgia. DataPath and its Swe-Dish Satellite Solutions subsidiary in Sweden will operate under the Rockwell Collins brand as part of the company’s government systems business.
Volvo Aero has been working on a new generation of lightweight engine fan frames, and is exhibiting a demonstrator on its stand (Hall 2A Stand B114). The fan frame is the largest the company has produced, and is constructed from composites and titanium. The fan frame is a complex part of the engine in terms of loads, especially as it incorporates the lugs that attach the engine to the airframe.
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd.’s Recce-U real-time reconnaissance system is making its debut here at Paris. The system has been developed from the RecceLite fast-jet tactical reconnaissance pod, an outgrowth of the widely used Litening targeting pod. Recce-U comprises a self-contained multi-sensor ISR system, a ground data link station and a ground exploitation station.
Vision Systems International, a joint venture between Elbit Systems and Rockwell Collins, has received a $54.1 million contract to begin production of Gen II helmet-mounted display systems for the F-35 Lightning II. Lockheed Martin awarded VSI the contract to deliver 52 displays and 30 aircraft shipsets. These HMDS components cover the requirements for Lots 1, 2 and 3 of F-35 low-rate initial production.
The first Gulfstream G250 super midsize business jet had its Honeywell HTF7250G engines mounted on June 1 at Israel Aerospace Industries’ factory near Tel Aviv. The wing was mated to the fuselage on May 12, after the first power-on test had taken place on May 5. The aircraft’s first flight is loosely pegged for “later this year,” while certification is scheduled for 2011.
Crane Aerospace & Electronics (Hall 5 Stand A24) is here at the show providing demonstrations of its SmartStem wireless tire pressure monitor, introduced two years ago on the Boeing 777. The technology replaces existing tire inflation valve stems with a special wireless tire pressure sensor valve that communicates tire pressure, temperature and other information to the cockpit or to a handheld reader.
Aviation Communications & Surveillance Systems (ACSS) is closing in on end-of-the-year certification for T3CAS, a product that combines a traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS), terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) and mode-S transponder with automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast capability (ADS-B) in a single unit.
Chromalloy CF6 gas turbine blades have reached the 10,000 flight-hour mark for the first time with an unidentified major airline. The blades are produced by BELAC, Chromalloy’s joint venture with various commercial carriers who are attempting to avoid the high cost of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) blades by using alternative parts manufacturer approval (PMA) blades.
Canada’s Viking Air has sold 10 of its Twin Otter Series 400 turboprops to Global Aerospace Logistics of Abu Dhabi. The agreement, which represents the largest order to date, calls for delivery of six landplane-configured DHC-6 Series 400s and four Guardian Twin Otter floatplanes, slated for use throughout the United Arab Emirates in both government and commercial applications.
