The TopFlight satellite communications terminal that Thales launched at last year’s Farnborough airshow will be installed later this year on new-build corporate aircraft produced by an as-yet unidentified OEM and should be certified to support WiFi-based passenger use by the second quarter of next year.
Lufthansa has selected Hamilton Sundstrand, a United Technologies company, to supply its APS 3200 auxiliary power unit (APU) for 30 new single-aisle Airbus aircraft. The company has also recently delivered the first production-configuration secondary electric power distribution center (SEPDC) chassis assembly for the Airbus A400M military airlifter.

Gil Michielin, v-p and general manager of Thales Commercial Aircraft Solutions, has been appointed president of EUROCAE, the European air transport electronic systems and equipment standardization body. Two EADS CEOs have swapped places–almost. Stéphane Mayer, who since 2003 was CEO of aerostructures and light aircraft specialist Socata, has moved to regional turboprop manufacturer ATR as its new CEO. Meanwhile, Jean-Michel Léonard, who was a former ATR CEO and used to be head of Airbus’ center of excellence in electric systems, has been appointed CEO of Socata.
Kuwait Airways has renewed a time-and-material engine maintenance contract with Snecma Services covering the CFM56-5C engines on its Airbus A340s. Snecma Services has overhauled more than 50 CFM56-5s for the Kuwaiti flag carrier in the course of a relationship that started more than 10 years ago.
Rolls-Royce’s U.S. branch has acquired the exclusive rights to use a new heat-resistant turbine blade coating invented by Iowa State University. The coating improves the durability and reliability of the ceramic thermal barrier applied to the blades to withstand metal temperatures approaching 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit.
