Maverick Helicopters, based in Las Vegas, announced plans to buy an additional 10 Eurocopter EC 130B4s for its air-tour operations in Las Vegas; the Grand Canyon; Sedona, Ariz.; and “anywhere else in the U.S. that a customer wants to fly,” Greg Rochna, Maverick president and CEO, told HAI Convention News.

French engine manufacturer Turbomeca is on a mission to increase its worldwide production capacity by 25 percent this year and is shopping for a location on the East Coast to build a U.S. plant, according to a company spokeswoman.

After a year in which only 29 EC 225 Super Pumas were sold, industry leader Eurocopter announced yesterday two separate deals for the helicopter, totaling 19 aircraft in all with an option for an additional eight. CHC Helicopter Corp. of Vancouver, British Columbia, ordered 16, while the Bristow Group of Houston bought three and took options for eight more.

HAI president Matt Zuccaro sees a bright future for the helicopter industry and is optimistic that Heli-Expo’07 may break attendance records set at last year’s show
in Dallas. “Indications are that we have a chance at it,” he said at yesterday’s HAI press conference.

The Suffolk County Police Department in New York took delivery of a Eurocopter EC 145 yesterday in a brief handover ceremony here at Heli-Expo 2007. The EC 145 will supplement two Eurocopter AS 350B2 AStars the department now operates, as well as one MD 900. (The SCPD is trading in another MD 900 to Eurocopter as part of its purchase of the new EC 145.)

AgustaWestland flexed its market muscle yesterday, announcing orders for 46 helicopters and emphasizing that the commercial helicopters division of parent company Finnmecanica is now a separate business unit reporting directly to AgustaWestland CEO Giuseppe Orsi.

Eurocopter CEO Lutz Bertling said the company is basking “in an exploding market with a booming turnover,” but he sounded a cautious tone with respect to the challenge of delivering its helicopters on time.

For years, Robinson Helicopter president and CEO Frank Robinson has delighted in leaking tidbits of information on the subject of his next helicopter, the R66. This year the company’s amiable founder all but launched the program by admitting that he has begun detailed design work and selected an engine supplier.
