Piaggio Aero, the Italian maker of the sleek P.180 Avanti, is engaged in “some very positive” discussions that would create a fractional-ownership fleet of P.180s.
Steve Hanvey, president and CEO of Piaggio America and a board member of parent company Piaggio Aero, told AIN the Genoa-based aircraft manufacturer has been approached by a number of fractional operators, “including some in Europe.”

A preliminary report issued by the UK Air Accidents Investigation Board on the January 4 crash of Challenger 604 N90AG at Birmingham, England, raises a suspicion that frost or ice on the wing may have been a factor. The pilot of a Cape Air Cessna 402 lost consciousness during a scheduled flight from Martha’s Vineyard to Hyannis, Mass., on February 8, forcing a Cape Air security trainer on board to take the controls and make a gear-up landing in Provincetown, Mass. The pilot, Ronald Crews, 50, roughly 10 months ago voluntarily removed himself from duty just as he prepared to take off on another flight from Martha’s Vineyard.

Not a single person interviewed by AIN expressed the opinion that the business aviation security requirements to fly to the Winter Olympics either made sense or did much to protect the Salt Lake City site from attack by air. Everyone was sympathetic with the intent but left cold by with the implementation.

Britain’s National Air Traffic Services (NATS) is stepping up operating trials aimed at making greater use of both en route and terminal area airspace. New procedures being evaluated include the use of parallel offset tracks in place of radar headings alone; closer spacing of parallel routes with autonomous operations; and the use of precision area navigation (PRnav) procedures for terminal area control.

The U.S. Air Force is investigating the crash of a C-21, the military version of the Learjet 35, the afternoon of February 2. The pilot and copilot–the only occupants–were killed when the jet crashed into a field near Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City, S.D., seconds after takeoff. Air Force investigators said witnesses saw the jet depart the base, turn back sharply and then crash nearly upside down.

Gulfstream Aerospace received FAA approval of an aircraft service change (ASC) for the Gulfstream II fuselage, effectively extending the life of the airframe from 20,000 to 36,000 flight hours. Life-extension work on the Gulfstreams, consisting primarily of inspections, will initially be done at Gulfstream’s main Savannah, Ga. facility but will eventually be expanded to other sites.
