Dallas Airmotive has expanded the services of its Regional Turbine Center (RTC) in Portsmouth, England, with the addition of repair, hot-section inspection and field service on the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW500 series of engines. The facility has a long history of working on the PT6A and JT15D and is CAA and EASA approved.

Recognizing the managerial potential of the maintenance technician was among the issues under discussion at the 16th annual NBAA Maintenance Management Conference, held this year in Dallas. Some 148 registrants, 26 exhibitors and 52 exhibitor staff members were on hand for the event, the theme of which was “learn from the past; live for the present; plan for the future.”
The obstacle clearance panel (OCP), a group of experts in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is designing more suitable IFR procedures for helicopters, taking advantage of new navigation equipment. Under the proposed rules, scheduled to take effect in the fall of next year, precision guidance on low-level routes to so-called points in space will become common.
Houston-based Bristow has exercised options to acquire four more Sikorsky S-92s. As part of the agreement, an earlier order for nine S-76s has been converted to options on the smaller rotorcraft. In addition, Bristow has taken options on 10 more S-92s, bringing the total number of options for this model to 14. –Thierry Dubois
The Office and Professional Employee International Union says that the pilot strike it led at PHI had a significant effect on the company’s 2006 financial results. The company posted a net loss of $667,000 last year, compared with net earnings of more than $14.1 million the previous year. Over the same period, the company’s operating revenues increased from $363.6 million to $413.1 million.
Helicopter Support has received certification from American Eurocopter to support the AS 350, AS 355, EC 120 and BO 105. A wholly owned subsidiary of Sikorsky, Helicopter Support is based at Tweed New Haven Airport in Connecticut. It provides parts and services.
Sikorsky last month opened a 25,000-sq-ft Design Engineering Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Workers at the center will conduct dynamic systems design and avionics integration. According to Mark Miller, Sikorsky vice president for engineering, work at this facility will initially support the military CH-53K heavy-lift program. The facility will also support Sikorsky’s future growth needs.
Sikorsky on April 10 announced that the FAA has certified the Sikorsky S-76C++ for operation in falling and blowing snow. FAA testing requires that the aircraft spend 20 minutes on the ground with the rotor turning during blustery snowfall, five minutes in low-altitude hover in a recirculating snow cloud and one hour in level flight.
AgustaWestland has announced orders for six AW139s in Australia. The Queensland Government and CHC, in New South Wales, have each purchased three of the medium twin helicopters. They will operate them in emergency medical and rescue services. The helicopter manufacturer has also won a contract from the Japan National Police Agency to supply five AW109 Power light twins for law-enforcement missions.
In late March Eurocopter inaugurated the new Eurocopter España plant in Albacete, in east central Spain. The new plant will produce the rear fuselage sections–made from composite materials–of the EC 135. The plant will also house the final assembly line for EC 135s destined for the Spanish market, and it is involved in several Eurocopter military programs. The site provides 355,000 sq ft of covered production facilities.
