Continuing what is expected to become an annual tradition, NBAA once again partnered with the nonprofit organization KaBOOM to build an aviation-theme playground for local kids. On Saturday, more than 250 NBAA members and community residents volunteered their services to construct the playground at the Hollowbrook Apartments near Orlando Executive Airport, the site of this year’s NBAA static display.

FreeFlight Systems announced that FAA certification was awarded in August for its RA 4000 radar altimeter, a package listed at $8,665 that consists of a remote antenna and dual antennas for more precise altitude information from zero to 2,000 feet agl.

Starting next week, Conklin & de Decker (Booth No. 4734) will provide Aircraft Cost Evaluator reports for a single aircraft via its Web site. The reports cost $75 for jets and $50 for turboprops, pistons and helicopters, with a 20-percent discount if a customer purchases more than one report. Customers will have 60 days from the date of purchase to review the reports, which provide up-to-date aircraft cost and performance data.

“Free” is the most effective word in sales, according to marketing gurus, so Universal Weather and Aviation’s enhanced, free online weather video broadcast should attract considerable attention. Featuring more frequent posting times, the new version of Aviation Weather Today also allows users to watch individual segments of the broadcasts. After a year of programming and Web design, Globalair.com has unveiled a new graphical fuel-price route planning service that allows operators to plot trips via airports offering the lowest fuel prices. Airbus (Booth No. 4776) announced here at the NBAA show that it has received 23 orders so far in 2008, including 14 for single-aisle models (five A318s and nine ACJs) and nine for widebodies (eight A350s and one A340). Many of these orders came from undisclosed customers, but Airbus did reveal the names of several buyers, including Jet Alliance (one ACJ and two A318 Elites) and Saudi Arabia-based MAZ Aviation (six A350s).

Phillips 66 Aviation has launched a reward program for buyers of Phillips 66 fuel, with an added bonus of double rewards when buyers use their Phillips 66 Aviation credit card. The new WingPoints program is flexible in that rewards are in the form of debit or gift cards usable at dozens of retailers, and the rewards can be given to anyone in the fuel-buying company.

As of September 25, the number of GPS-based wide-area augmentation system (WAAS) instrument approach procedures in the U.S. surpassed the number of ILS approaches. “This is clearly a turning point for aviation and the way pilots navigate,” the FAA said in a statement announcing the milestone.
