Eurocopter this summer unveiled two modernized facilities at Donauwörth, its main German industrial site. Its blade shop saw a complete re-engineering aimed at reducing lead times and optimizing the production process. Consequently, its production and repair capacities have increased by 40 percent. Design, engineering, production process and quality control and customer service are now housed in one building.

AgustaWestland has delivered two helicopters–one AW109 Power light twin and one AW139 medium twin–to the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau. These two aircraft are part of a June 2006 order, which includes two CA109 Powers to be produced by AgustaWestland’s local joint venture with AVIC II. The CA109s are said to be in the final assembly phase at Jiangxi Change Agusta Helicopter facilities.
Air Methods’ products division has been selected by American Eurocopter to provide medical interiors, avionics and airframe accessories for the AS 350 and EC 130. Air Methods says it is capable of 10 to 20 conversions per year. Each conversion has a market value of approximately $500,000. Air Methods has performed almost 40 Eurocopter EMS modifications over the last four years.
Sikorsky announced that the FAA has cleared the S-92 to take off and land in crosswinds up to 35 knots, versus the previous 20-knot limitation, and to carry additional payload based on calculated surplus engine power and specific flight conditions.
The Miami branch of the United States Customs and Border Protection (CPB) Office of Air and Marine has taken delivery of two AgustaWestland AW139s. The helicopters are equipped with multi-payload electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, laser designator combined with EO/IR and multimode weather radar and communication systems. Systems integration was performed by L-3 Communications in Waco, Texas.
Sikorsky Aircraft has successfully ground tested fly-by-wire (FBW) technology that will debut on 28 H-92s slated for delivery in 2009 to Canadian military forces. The H-92 is the military variant of the S-92. Sikorsky partnered with BAE Systems to develop the FBW system.
Several French-based companies, universities and local authorities have joined forces in a project to reduce helicopter support costs by 30 percent. Thirteen small firms, all located around Montauban, near Toulouse, are participating in the $14 million Helimaintenance project.
The Colorado Department of Transportation has launched a new technology initiative that will provide enhanced surveillance, and thereby improve access, to its many mountain airports. Currently, IFR flight operations at those locations are limited because surrounding mountains block the line-of-sight signals of the FAA’s ATC secondary (transponder interrogating) radars, preventing the monitoring of lower-level arriving and departing traffic.
Jean-Paul Herteman has been named chairman and CEO of the Safran supervisory board. He succeeds Jean-Paul Béchat, whose term expired on September 2. In addition, Jean-Paul Ebanga is replacing Michel Dechelotte as chairman and CEO of PowerJet, a subsidiary of Safran’s Snecma.
Mitsubishi MU-2B-35, Argyle, Fla., Sept. 1, 2006 – The NTSB determined the probable cause of the MU-2 accident to be the pilot’s inadvertent flight into thunderstorm activity that resulted in the loss of control, design limits of the airplane being exceeded and subsequent in-flight breakup.
