CFM International continues to work “on a daily basis” with Boeing and Airbus on new engine applications for the 737 and A320 families, according to Eric Bachelet, president and CEO of the General Electric-Snecma joint venture.

Elbit Systems (Stand N65) is showing a big-screen multimedia presentation here at Singapore entitled “Networking in Action.” The presentation features real-life combat situations and demonstrates how the “systems’ interoperability, in offensive operations on enemy territory, enables achievement of crucial objectives.” It also allows viewers to experience combat experiences and missions with special effects replicating how the systems work.
A senior Pentagon official called for greater cooperation between the U.S. and partner countries in developing a comprehensive C4ISR architecture, during the Asia Pacific Security Conference (APSEC) here in Singapore this week. “We must share information with partners where appropriate, and we need their help to plug the gaps in coverage,” said Bruce Lemkin, Deputy Undersecretary of the Air Force for International Affairs.
Embraer has chosen FlightSafety International as the authorized training provider for its mid-light Legacy 450 and midsize Legacy 500 executive jets, the company announced here. The partnership also extends to the super-midsize Legacy 600, the large Legacy 650 and the ultra-large Lineage 1000, as well as its family of E-Jet commercial airliners.
Middle East Airlines (MEA) has placed a contract for International Aero Engines to support the V2500 engines that power its Airbus A320 fleet. The long-term deal covers turbofans on six aircraft covered by firm orders and three more that the Beirut-based carrier has optioned. The operator took delivery of the first of these V2500 SelectOne-powered aircraft in January 2009.
Bombardier has named classical music star Lang Lang as one of its business-aircraft brand ambassadors. According to the Canadian airframer, the classical pianist’s need for flexibility, comfort and timesaving makes him the consummate business traveler–perfectly suited to represent the Learjet, Challenger and Global aircraft brands.
Potential bidders for a 75-aircraft Indian air force basic trainer requirement met this week for a pre-bid conference. India has issued a dozen manufacturers a request for proposals, with responses due by March 17. Delivery of the first 12 aircraft is expected within two years of a contract award, ruling out anything other than an off-the-shelf purchase.
Lockheed Martin announced another order for Sniper targeting pods from the U.S. Air Force, and revealed that Saudi Arabia has recently become a customer, presumably to fit on its F-15 fighters. The Sniper provides high-resolution imagery for precision targeting or simply for monitoring the ground, in a role that has become known as nontraditional intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
The new G250 business jet that IAI builds in partnership with Gulfstream Aerospace is continuing the flight-test program that it started on Dec. 11, 2009. In recent flights, the aircraft has flown up to 40,000 feet at speeds of up to Mach 0.85 as it heads for planned certification before the end of 2011.
Under a memorandum of understanding signed at last June’s Paris airshow, IAI is working with Airbus to develop a semi-robotic tractor called Taxibot, which tows an aircraft from the airport gate to the take off point and gets it to the gate after landing. This means that aircraft don’t have to run their engines to taxi, thereby reducing pollution, noise and fuel costs.
