Texas state Department of Public Safety director Steve McCraw said the agency will no longer shoot suspects from the air unless the suspects fire first, either at the helicopter or another target on the ground. Last October a DPS helicopter opened fire on a fleeing pickup truck, killing two illegal aliens hiding inside.

London-based Andrew Winch Designs has created an interior for super-yacht owners who want their AW189 to have the same “level of detail and entertainment technology” as their ships. The cabin features six full seats enhanced with built-in “whisper-dish” noise-cancellation systems. A glass dividing bulkhead, situated between the cabin and cockpit, displays flight information and entertainment.
CHC maintenance, repair and overhaul subsidiary Heli-One has opened a facility in Rzeszow, Poland. Work has begun on Heli-One Poland’s first project: the major overhaul (G-Check), repaint and modification of a CHC AS322L Super Puma. By year-end “a new, customized hangar” will replace the current temporary facility. The company plans to invest “more than $15 million in building costs, purchasing, training and other expenses related to the operation.” Heli-One’s fourth major workshop location, the new site is expected to employ more than 100 people by 2015.
Reorganization of Great Britain’s police helicopter bases is well under way, in a campaign to provide “more efficient and accessible” air support to police forces in England and Wales. Although the number of bases is being cut, the improved efficiency of the system should eventually ensure that 98 percent of the population is within 20 minutes’ flight time of a base.

During rapid forward flight or maneuvering, airflow stalls on the main rotor blade as it retreats (moves backwards), giving rise to a “dynamic stall” and subjecting the rotor head control rods to formidable dynamic loads.
The Colombian Army formally inducted into its fleet five new Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk helicopters. Colombia is the first South American country to acquire the S-70i variant, which is assembled at Sikorsky’s PZL Mielec facility in Poland.
Sikorsky said the helicopters were custom-equipped in the U.S. for the special forces of the Colombian army’s air assault division. They join a national fleet of 96 UH-60L Black Hawks operated by the Colombian National Police, army and air force. Colombia operates the world’s fourth-largest Black Hawk fleet.
Eurocopter Japan has delivered to Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency a Eurocopter AS365N3 Dauphin medium-twin helicopter retrofitted with a high-speed, real-time satellite transmission system. The helicopter’s satellite communication system enables direct transmission to relay satellites, without interruption by the helicopter’s moving rotor blades. Mitsubishi Electric developed the system, which solves these interference issues when ground-based networks are unavailable.
The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has explained why the emergency lubrication system sent a “failure” warning–while working nominally–to the crews of the two Eurocopter EC225s that ditched in the North Sea last year.
On Monday at Heli-Expo, AgustaWestland revealed that it has been secretly flying an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing demonstration aircraft powered by twin-electric, direct-drive tiltrotors. The “Project Zero” tiltrotor was designed and built in six months by the company’s advanced concepts group and has been flying since 2011. It features elevons for pitch and roll control and in forward flight, a V-tail for longitudinal stability, and a lifting body design with two integrated tiltrotors than can be tilted through 90 degrees.
