Top Russian officials have confirmed sales deals with China for the Sukhoi Su-35 and with Indonesia on an additional quantity of Su-30MK2 multirole fighters.
Bombardier Business Aircraft saw a “remarkable level” of order intake last year, logging net orders for 343 aircraft versus 191 in 2011, the Canadian aircraft manufacturer reported today.
Transport Canada has granted type certification for the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW1500G engine that will power Bombardier’s new CSeries narrowbody airliner. The engine maker has conducted more than 4,000 hours of tests on what is set to be the first operational member of its PurePower Geared Turbofan family.

Piper Aircraft ended 2012 with nearly $149 million in annual revenue from new aircraft sales, up more than 13 percent from the previous year. This revenue increase was the result of a 16-percent rise in deliveries last year to 158 aircraft, 22 more than in 2011. Piper delivered 93 of its top-line M-Class aircraft–including 39 Meridian turboprop singles–compared with 82 the previous year, which also helped the annual revenue mix. Meanwhile, the company named Jack Mill as vice president of engineering today.
Basel, Switzerland-based Amac Aerospace has been granted maintenance organization approval by the State Civil Aviation Administration of Russia. This approval allows Amac to perform base and line maintenance work on all Russian-owned business aircraft, including bizliners. It also allows Amac to undertake heavy maintenance work up to C-checks at its facility at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. Since receiving the approval, Amac has worked on several Russian-owned jets, including the Gulfstream G450 and G550, Airbus ACJ319 and Boeing BBJ.
The recent completion of European certification of Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB not only boosted Airbus’s efforts to fly its new A350XWB widebody in the first half of this year, it freed the UK-based engine maker to turn its attention to the Trent XWB-97 turbofan, designed to power the longer-range A350-1000 (the standard 84,000-pound-thrust Trent XWB powers the -800 and -900 versions).
Israel’s Xsight has developed its new FODetect system to help airport managers keep runways clear during rainstorms or even in the middle of the night. Using a small swiveling radar transmitter and sensor unit installed near the runway’s edge, the FODetect beams sweeps the runway as often as every 30 seconds and, like traditional radar, highlights–both visually and aurally–objects as tiny as a rivet that may have fallen unnoticed from vehicles. The operator watching the FODetect screen will also see a high-resolution image of the object that caused the alarm.
Indian light helicopter requirements remain subject to a bureaucratic procurement process. The program to acquire 197 reconnaissance and surveillance helicopters (RSH) is close to being scrapped, but Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) has inked a contract for 187 light utility helicopters (LUH). HAL is also proposing the LUH for a new Indian Navy requirement. Meanwhile, HAL continues to develop its light combat helicopter (LCH), which first flew in March 2010.
The integration of the Indo-Russian BrahMos missile on 40 of the Indian air force (IAF) Su-30MKI fleet of combat aircraft is proceeding this year. The land- and ship-launched version of the highly maneuverable, supersonic, anti-ship cruise missile have already been tested successfully.
