Bombardier and China’s Comac announced last week at Airshow China in Zhuhai the successful conclusion of the first phase of their collaboration covering program commonalities between the Canadian company’s new CSeries airliner and the Comac C919 narrowbody.
Lockheed Martin, the largest U.S. government contractor with $46 billion in annual sales, appointed its first female chief executive on November 9 after CEO-in-waiting Christopher Kubasik resigned over a “close personal relationship with a subordinate employee,” the company announced. The Bethesda, Md.-based company named Marillyn Hewson, 58, to take over as president and CEO on January 1, succeeding outgoing CEO Robert Stevens.
Few would argue with the characterization by a senior Western airframe manufacturer of the Comac C919 as “a serious project by a serious company.” But the clumsy effort by the Chinese conglomerate to certify the ARJ21 regional jet begs the question: Do serious intentions necessarily equate to a serious product?
AMI Aviation Services is taking pre-orders for an STC and PMA kit with optional installation services to retrofit the Beechcraft 1900D with Garmin G950 glass-panel technology. G950 avionics offer greater reliability, reduced weight, simplified fleet-wide training and a flexible architecture designed to accommodate future technology. The kit includes, in part, the three-screen Garmin G950 system, dual 10.4-inch primary flight displays with Garmin synthetic-vision technology and a 15-inch multifunction display with Eicas. Expected availability is next year’s second quarter.
China’s Spring Airlines has ordered CFM56-5B engines to power a pair of new Airbus A320s that it is due to received in January and July 2014. Engine maker CFM International announced the $40 million deal on November 14 at Airshow China 2012.
Sikorsky and Ruili Jingcheng Group (RJG) signed two contracts for the introduction of an S-92 and S-76D, marking Sikorsky’s first S-92 helicopter sale to a private Chinese operator and the first-ever S-76D sale into China. The signing took place today at Airshow China 2012 in Zhuhai. Both aircraft will be configured for airline use.
Hawker Beechcraft, set to become simply Beechcraft Corp. when it emerges from U.S. bankruptcy protection in late February, has confirmed the allotment of funding for research and development of new turboprop and piston single-engine aircraft. Late last month, the company announced it would shut down its business jet lines to focus on its more successful turboprops and piston-powered aircrafts.
On Saturday at Vero Beach (Fla.) Airport, Piper Aircraft celebrated its 75th anniversary with a fly-in. More than 60 Piper airplanes, ranging from J-3 Cubs to Meridian turboprop singles, flew in for the diamond anniversary event. During the fly-in, Piper announced a Garmin G1000 upgrade for its Seminole and Archer, as well as a launch order from the Florida Institute of Technology for eight G1000-equipped Archers and options for 16 more. Piper and FIT also announced a career alliance to provide enhanced vocational opportunities for FIT aviation program graduates.
Comac has received 50 more commitments for its new C919 narrowbody airliner. Three contracts announced on the first day of Airshow China 2012 in Zhuhai call for 20 each of the twinjet to go to Chinese carriers Joy Air and Hebei Aviation, with 10 more signed for by leasing group Gecas. But the first flight of the C919 now seems likely to be pushed back again due to a new delay with Comac’s ARJ21 regional airliner development.
China Aviation Industry General Aircraft Co., Ltd. (Caiga) has chose GE Aviation’s new H85 turboprop engine to power its new Primus 150 aircraft. Set to be the first purpose-built executive single-engine turboprop built in China, the Primus 150 is a pressurized five-seater with an all-composite carbon-fiber airframe.
