Embraer announced an upgraded version of the Phenom 100 entry-level light jet last year and customers are beginning to take delivery of the new 100E. The aircraft introduces multifunction spoilers and upgraded interior options. Base price is $4.161 million, but options such as premium seats, a solid lavatory door and an extra passenger seat/kibitzer that faces sideways across from the cabin entry door can quickly take the price past $4.4 million, putting it in line with Cessna’s new M2 with a few options.
Preliminary Report: Four Die in Kenyan Freighter Crash
Fokker 50, Nairobi, Kenya, July 2, 2014–A Fokker 50 freighter headed to Mogadishu, Somalia, crashed shortly after takeoff at 4 a.m. from Runway 06 at Nairobi-Jomo Kenyatta Airport. All four crewmembers on board were killed in the accident and the aircraft was destroyed when it came down in a residential area a mile northeast of the airport.
Preliminary Report: Learjet and Typhoon Collide in Mid Air
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) report on the August 2012 runway overrun at St. John’s, Newfoundland, involving a Russian Ilyushin Il-76TD found a number of actions that culminated with the 140-ton aircraft rolling off the end of the airport’s 8,500-foot Runway 11. Despite the use of maximum reverse thrust, the aircraft departed the hard surface at approximately 40 knots and came to a stop 640 feet beyond the end of the runway. No injuries were reported to any of the 10 people on board.
Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB) released a final report early this month on the June 2010 accident at Ottawa’s MacDonald-Cartier International Airport (CYOW) in which the pilots of a Trans States Airlines Embraer ERJ 145LR were unable to stop the aircraft on the airport’s 8,000-foot Runway 7 during landing. With 33 passengers and a crew of three–none of whom was injured–the aircraft made a smooth touchdown 1,740 feet beyond the threshold of a wet runway approximately eight knots too fast.
Eclipse Aerospace is offering an anti-skid braking system for new and existing Eclipse 500/550s. The lack of anti-skid braking has proved a problem for the airplane, with locked brakes contributing to several blown-tire incidents. The system, which adds approximately 17 pounds to aircraft empty weight, includes brake control and wheel speed sensors, a dedicated control computer and software updates to the avionics. Testing has indicated it is possible to stop the aircraft from normal landing speeds in less than 750 feet using “aggressive” braking.
