Runway 16R/34L, the primary runway at Van Nuys Airport in southern California, is closed until July 26 at 11:59 p.m. The closure is part of a $20.5 million improvement program, which includes asphalt milling and paving of more than 4,000 feet of the center section of the runway. Runway 16L/34R (4,000 feet long) remains open as normal (closing at night from 10:45 p.m. to 6 a.m.). Pilots are urged to check notams before flying to Van Nuys. The runway improvement project will be completed in August.

Jet Support Services (JSSI) and VistaJet International signed a deal under which JSSI will provide hourly-cost maintenance coverage for the Rolls-Royce BR710 engines and Honeywell APU on the operator’s first of 50 Bombardier Global 5000s and 6000s on order. The long-term agreement is valued at more than $205 million.
“This is the largest contract in our history and, to the best of our knowledge, one of the largest if not the largest ever in the hourly-cost maintenance sector,” Neil Book, JSSI’s president and CEO, told AIN.
PT Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) AeroAsia, an Indonesian’ maintenance company, has received European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) recognition. “We are grateful the training organization undertaken by GMF Learning Services has been recognized at the international level,” said GMF Learning Services and corporate culture vice president Hermawan Syahrul. GMF Learning Services is set to provide the required training to meet the MRO’s technical personnel needs and will also offer maintenance training to both national and international aviation industry technicians, he added.

International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) has finalized an order for the purchase of 50 E2 E-Jets from Embraer, including 25 E190-E2s and 25 E195-E2s, the Los Angeles-based AIG subsidiary announced Wednesday. The order, originally announced as a letter of intent at last month’s Paris Air Show, also includes options for another 50 airplanes.

The U.S. Court of Appeals has unanimously upheld the FAA’s right to impose the mandatory overwater North Shore Route on helicopter traffic over New York’s Long Island. Writing for the Court, U.S. circuit judge Richard Roberts rejected a legal challenge (petition for review) to the route filed by the Helicopter Association International to overturn the mandate.
As of August 1, first officers for U.S. Part 121 air carriers will need to have logged at least 1,500 hours as well as meeting other requirements. The new regulations, however, do not address the quality of the logged time, and cargo operator Ameriflight has petitioned the FAA to allow pilots to log more time when flying as second-in-command (SIC) in Part 135 cargo operations where just one pilot is required. The petition was filed in February but just recently went live for public comment.
