The U.S. regional airline industry will shrink over the next three years as new regulations governing pilot employment and structural changes precipitated by new, less profitable code-share contracts and pilot-union scope clauses take hold, Republic Airways CEO Bryan Bedford predicted during a February 27 conference call to brief analysts on his company’s fourth-quarter earnings.
The system for monitoring aircraft noise at Boston Logan International Airport and Hanscom Field is being upgraded to provide near real-time flight-tracking data on the web to the public so they can use the technology to report aircraft noise complaints online. The system consists of 36 field monitors–30 in the communities around Logan Airport and six around Hanscom Field.
Bedford, Mass.-based Rectrix Aviation began construction of a 26,000-sq-ft FBO at Worcester Regional Airport in Central Massachusetts on Tuesday. The $5 million facility will provide hangar space for maintenance and storage, and a customer terminal and conference center. Rectrix is currently providing FBO services at the field from the airport’s original main terminal until the new FBO is completed by the end of next year.
Hanscom Field in Bedford, Mass., has been recognized for outstanding achievement in airport snow removal and ice control. The general aviation facility received the Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airports’ Balchen/Post Award, which recognizes the dedicated efforts of snow crews in maintaining airports in a safe and operational status during the winter. Hanscom Field recorded more than 69 inches of snow during the 2012 to 2013 winter season, significantly more than the airport’s average of 47 inches, and crews responded to 17 storms during that time.
