Biman Bangladesh Airlines

The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 has flown its last passenger-carrying service, at least in civilian colors, after a career spanning 43 years. Biman Bangladesh Airlines operated its final scheduled flight with the type from Dhaka to Birmingham in the UK via Kuwait on February 20, before operating nine local scenic flights as part of the type’s farewell ceremonies over the following weekend.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines, which has operated at a loss since 2008, expects to break even in the current 2013/14 financial year and to return to profitability the following year after cutting its losses from $75 million in 2010/11 to $25 million in 2011/12. At a press briefing in New Delhi last week, the Asian carrier’s CEO, Kevin Steele, announced plans to rationalize and double the size of its fleet from eight to 16 aircraft to allow it to expand its route network with new services such as Dhaka-New York starting next April.

Boeing fired the starting pistol on the much-anticipated launch of the 787-10 here yesterday, in the process collecting order commitments for 102 airplanes from five customers across Europe, Asia and North America. Air Lease, United Airlines, GE Capital Aviation Services, British Airways and Singapore Airlines form the group of launch customers.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner

The third Boeing 787 Dreamliner arrived this morning at Dubai International Airport for the Dubai Air Show, which officially starts tomorrow. This is the new model’s first appearance in the Middle East.

Although used in the flight test program, the aircraft has been outfitted with a posh interior to demonstrate the 787’s features.
