The UK’s Thomson Airways has switched customer bookings for flights aboard Boeing 787s in May and June to Boeing 767 service and promised customers refunds of the premiums they paid to fly aboard the Dreamliner, the airline announced Tuesday.

Italian helicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland signed a memorandum of understanding in late January to establish a joint venture with Brazilian aircraft company Embraer. The plans calls for the two companies to manufacture AgustaWestland helicopters in Brazil for both the domestic and regional military and civilian markets.

Cobham Aerospace Communication’s Digital Audio Control System (DACS) has been selected for Life Flight Network’s 15 new AgustaWestland AW119Kx helicopters. The Aurora, Ore.-based aeromedical transport provider is the launch customer for the AW119Kx and will be taking delivery of its first aircraft this year. According to Cobham, the DACS is a compact and lightweight unit that “distributes and controls aircraft audio to/from all transceivers, receivers and audio warning systems.” Software in the DACS allows customization of the system to fit customer needs.

Global demand for helicopters is expected to increase over the next five years, according to the results of Honeywell’s Turbine-Powered Civil Helicopter Purchase Outlook survey, released here at Heli-Expo ‘13. Deliveries of new civilian-use helicopters will total between 4,900 and 5,600 units during 2013-2017 according to the survey, with strong demand focused in the first three years of the period and reflected in every region of the world. This is 35 percent higher for this three-year period than was recorded in last year’s survey.

Lease Corporation International is leasing a new AW139.

Lease Corporation International (LCI), which signed a large helicopter order with AgustaWestland at last year’s Heli-Expo show, has announced an agreement with aerial services group Avincis (Booth No. C7211), which is leasing a new AW139. This will be operated for offshore crew changes in North Sea oil and gas fields by Avincis’s Aberdeen-based subsidiary Bond Offshore Helicopters.

Taking into account both civil and military markets, the yearly delivery value of rotorcraft is comparable to the $18 billion business jet industry, according to aviation analyst Brian Foley. In fact, he is forecasting some 24,000 rotorcraft deliveries over the next 10 years, including 12,000 civil turbines, 6,000 military turbines and 6,000 piston helicopters valued at roughly $250 billion–roughly the same outlook for business jet billings.

Rolls-Royce launched the latest version of its M250 turboshaft engine, the M250-C47E, today on the eve of Heli-Expo. The new variant replaces the -47B and -47M and incorporates the value improvement package upgrade kit that Rolls Royce introduced last year, as well as a dual-channel Fadec. As a result, the 700-shp engine boasts a 5-percent improvement in high and hot performance over its predecessor, an almost 8-percent improvement in takeoff power, to 700 shp, and reduced specific fuel consumption.

Phoenix Heliparts, with 1st Source Bank and Southwest Aviation Insurance Group, plans to offer financing and insurance options on its future MD 500 helicopter sales. The company aims to become the one-stop shop for MD 500 purchases by “providing a total service experience and simplifying the process of restoring and upgrading MD 500s.” This week at Heli-Expo, Phoenix Heliparts is offering a $10,000 credit to anyone who signs a purchase offer for one or both MD 500s currently undergoing complete refurbishment and places a deposit at the show.

Dart Aerospace is using the 2013 Heli-Expo show as a springboard for not only its new black and red logo, but also as the debut for the reorganization of all Dart sub-brands. These include Apical Industries, DAS, Dart Helicopter Services, Geneva Aviation and Red Barn Machine. According to Dart, it has more than 600 STCs and offers 5,000 products for sale across these subsidiaries.
