Airplanes flying into Cobb County Airport-McCollum Field in Kennesaw, Ga., soon won’t have to clear customs at another airport, as officials last week broke ground on a dedicated, on-site U.S. Customs inspection facility at the airport. When the facility is complete, the general aviation airport will be the first in the Atlanta metro area to offer the service. Construction of the $800,000 facility is slated for completion by April next year, with customs services starting in July. A new $3 million, 80-foot control tower is also scheduled to open at the airport in April next year.
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport
Signature Flight Support agreed last month to purchase the FBO component of Metro Flight Services at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). Metro Flight was one of two FBOs at the airport, the other being owned by Signature sister company ASIG, which also provides the airline fueling and ground handling at DTW. Once the acquisition is complete, the FBOs will be combined into one Signature Flight Support location, leaving the BBA Aviation subsidiary the lone general aviation services provider on the field, while ASIG will continue to handle the airline traffic.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reached a new record when inspectors at U.S. airports confiscated 65 guns in one seven-day period ending May 24. That number represents a 30-percent increase over the agency’s previous record of 50 in a week.
The Paragon Network, a group of independent FBOs, has added Detroit to its growing web of national coverage. Metro Flight Services at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is the 24th FBO to join the group since its inception in early 2011. One of two FBOs on the field, Metro Flight is preparing to open a new 100,000 sq ft facility at the airport later this summer. The former site of a private flight department, it includes 45,000 sq ft of heated hangar space, 20,000 sq ft of climate controlled parking, and a 35,000 sq ft terminal, offices and shop space.
The FAA has commissioned the first implementation of a new generation of precision runway monitor (PRM) equipment at Detroit/Wayne Airport (DTW), to permit simultaneous close parallel approaches to adjacent runways having less than 4,300 feet between their centerlines. At DTW these are Runways 21L and 22R, separated by 3,000 feet, the current lower limit.
