Ruag Aviation announced a teaming with Highland Integrated Surveillance Systems (HISS) to market and deliver turnkey electronic warfare solutions for aircraft. The Swiss and American companies have “complementary competencies,” according to RUAG.
Lockheed C-130 Hercules
Highland Integrated Surveillance Systems (HISS) announced this week that it has secured its first sale outside North America for its Sabir (special airborne mission installation and response) system. The company secured the deal in June with an undisclosed European operator of a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules.
Embraer Defense and Security is on course to complete the first prototype of the KC-390 tactical airlifter/tanker in time for it to make its first flight before the end of the year. At the specially built assembly site at Gavião Pexoto the fuselage of the first aircraft has already been partly painted in the colors of the Brazilian air force, which is the lead customer for the aircraft. The second aircraft is also in final assembly, and is scheduled to fly soon after the first machine.
Israel’s Air and Space Force on Wednesday took delivery of the first of six Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules it has ordered through U.S. foreign military sales channels. While the aircraft had been formally handed over to the IASF last June, it was retained in the U.S. for tests and training.
The UK Royal Air Force retired its four remaining Lockheed TriStar tanker/transports on schedule this week, as the replacement fleet of Airbus A330-MRTTs grows. Seven of these aircraft, known as the Voyager in RAF service and provided under contract by AirTanker, have now been delivered. Two more are slated to to be handed over by the end of June.
Rolls-Royce said the first T56 engine enhancement package it assembled and ground tested for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s WP-3D Orion weather reconnaissance aircraft demonstrated a 13-percent reduction in fuel consumption, beating the required 7.9 percent.

Esterline CMC Electronics (CMC) is displaying its Cockpit 9000 upgrade solution for C-130 and other transport aircraft at this year’s Dubai Airshow (Stand 1451). The integrated avionics system can extend the service life of a 20- to 40-year-old aircraft by another 30 years at a fraction of the cost of a new aircraft, the company contends.
The AirTanker consortium comprises Babcock, Cobham, EADS, Rolls-Royce and Thales. These partners have all contributed equipment and/or buildings to the project. AirTanker Ltd. holds the contract with the UK MoD; service delivery is via another registered company, AirTanker Services Ltd.
