The AviaGroup Nord announced plans for a major redevelopment of the Pulkovo-2 terminal in St. Petersburg. The project will transform a 1950s-era airline terminal into a modern business aviation complex and should be complete by November.

Since the building has protected historical status, AviaGroup Nord is able to make only limited changes to its façade, but the interior is undergoing radical changes, while some striking Soviet-era aviation-themed artwork is being retained.

Pulkovo-3 FBO

Russia’s second largest city, St. Petersburg, has a new FBO and by year-end it should have a second. The Pulkovo-3 FBO at Pulkovo International Airport officially opened for business on March 6, initially handling only domestic flights. According to the purpose-built facility’s operator, JetPort SPb, it should be ready to handle international flights as soon as customs and immigration facilities are fully in place.

JetPort’s new FBO at Russia’s St. Petersburg Pulkovo Airport officially opened last Wednesday at the Pulkovo-3 building. The facility, which sits on a 24-acre lot, plans to add international flight capability “in the near future,” after arrangements are finalized with the Russian immigration, customs and civil aviation authorities.

A Russian company called Satellit-Development has plans to develop a heliport between Saint Petersburg’s “beltway” and Pulkovo airport. Dubbed Heli-Drive, it is said to be the first commercial heliport in the country. “I hope our project will help medical and rescue services, as well as private enterprises and guests of Saint Petersburg,” said co-owner Vladimir Skigin.

Russia’s seventh annual Jet Expo show opens tomorrow, with more than 100 exhibiting companies from 27 countries and up to around 40 business jets and helicopters at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport. According to Jet Expo managing director Nikita Gorchakov, the rapid expansion of the three-day show (September 27-29) reflects strong growth in demand for business aircraft in Russia and the wider Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

As VIPport nears completion of its Pulkovo-3 FBO at St. Petersburg Pulkovo Airport, another prominent local player, Avia Group, has revealed its own plans to set up a competing business aviation center on the airfield. At present, the airport has no FBOs; should both developers deliver on their promises, it will have two independent FBOs by year-end.
