Avidyne, based in Lincoln, Mass., has added ADS-B IN functionality to its ADS-B products for general aviation. By partnering its AXP340 mode-S transponder, which provides ADS-B OUT capability, with its 978 MHz MLB100 receiver, users can access traffic and flight information system-broadcast (FIS-B) services for display on numerous Avidyne displays. The receiver will be available in early 2015 and is listed at $2,495, including connector kit and mounting tray. Upgrading existing systems to work with the MLB100 is achieved by a field-loadable software update.
SmartSky Networks is launching an airborne 4G LTE-based network, SmartSky, which will serve both business aviation and the airlines starting in 2016. According to the Melbourne, Fla.-based company, SmartSky will provide more than 10 times the typical speed and capacity of networks currently on the market by using 60 MHz of spectrum for its air-to-ground (ATG) data communications.
Trig Avionics has partnered with the NextGen GA Fund, which will help provide loans for avionics upgrades. Trig’s TT31 mode-S transponder is an easy and cost-effective tray-compatible retrofit for the ubiquitous King KT76A found in many GA aircraft, and this upgrade provides a 1090ES-compliant ADS-B out installation. Trig also manufactures the “world’s smallest” mode-S transponder, the TT22, which features 1090ES ADS-B out and an integral altitude encoder.
At the recent ILA Berlin Airshow, Airbus Defence & Space reported progress with the passive radar [alternatively, passive coherent location (PCL)] system that predecessor company Cassidian had been developing since 2006. Frank Bernhardt, project manager, said that the company has “worked closely” with two armed forces on tests of the system. One of them is Germany.
The FAA proposes to adopt a new airworthiness directive for certain Rockwell Collins TDR-94 and TDR-94D mode-S transponders. The AD was prompted by instances of the transponders not properly responding to mode-S only all-call interrogations when the airplane transitioned from a ground to airborne state.
The Elta subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (Booth P39) has added an electronic intelligence (Elint) capability to its ELM-2060 synthetic-aperture radar reconnaissance pod. The pod fits on the centerline of fighters from almost any origin, and has already been sold to a number of customers worldwide.
HeliMedia was at Helitech displaying its video mission box (VMB), a portable unit able to transmit live video over more than 100 nm thanks to microwave technology. For example, an Italian operator, Helica, has connected it to a full-HD 1080p camera.
Inside the helicopter, the VMB replaces one seat, using existing mounting points. It is easily transferrable from one aircraft to another, explained Steve Watson, business development manager of the Cheltenham, UK-based company. With two technicians the process takes approximately two hours, he estimated.
L-3 Aviation Products announced that it has established a presence in India and that AgustaWestland has selected L-3’s Trilogy electronic standby instrument for new production A119 helicopters.
In February, L-3 (Chalet A306, Static E170) had announced plans to add “technical support for its customers, engineering oversight for programs and expanded business development coverage” at the India Air Show in February. “The local presence advances L-3’s long-term business growth in the emerging Indian aerospace sector, as well as the region,” according to L-3.
A new high-tech voice communication control system recently approved by the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority has been installed in the ATC center at London Biggin Hill Airport. Created by Netherlands-based Micro Electronics Products, the quarter-million-dollar system known as TCP990 includes a central electronic processor in the control tower that integrates and processes all inputs from UHF and VHF channels, personnel and emergency radio units as well as a slate of pre-selected contacts at each controller position and on the ATC assistant desk.
Sensor Systems (Booth No. 1994) is taking the wraps off three new antennas at NBAA’12. The first is the S72-1735-24/-26 TAS/Tcas directional antenna designed to pair with the Garmin GTS 800 traffic system. The antenna has better bearing accuracy than its predecessors, which means users see the traffic depicted just where it is. The antenna style is low-drag, making it a good fit on regional jets and business jets.
