The recent scrapping in Afghanistan of 16 Alenia C-27A Spartans, which were meant to serve as the core airlift fleet of the Afghan air force, has refocused attention on the equally problematic saga of C-27J procurement by the Pentagon. The Department of Defense (DoD) has bought only 21 of the 78 C-27Js that it planned for the U.S Air Force and Army. These are still flying in the U.S., but not on missions for which they were originally intended.

Emteq has been awarded a contract to provide its Quasar full mood lighting system for a Boeing 787 VIP completion that is scheduled to be delivered next year. Included in the contract are a Quasar ceiling dome light and Quasar II wash lighting. The 115-VAC system uses self-regulating power consumption and, as such, dispenses with a transformer rectifier unit, with an attendant weight saving. The lighting system interfaces directly with the cabin management system, requiring no additional controllers.

In conjunction with PT Dirgantara Indonesia, Airbus Defence & Space is undertaking a program to update the C212 Aviocar utility transport as the NC212i, to be built in Indonesia. The partnership has selected Genesys Aerosystems of Mineral Wells, Texas, to provide its S-Tec 5000 digital autopilot for the NC212i. The system provides a range of three-axis autopilot functions, including course intercept, vertical speed hold, indicated air speed hold and straight-and-level recovery. The S-Tec 5000 is fully integrated with the NC212i’s EFIS displays.

KaiserAir of Santa Rosa, Calif., announced a Fans 1/A upgrade for the Gulfstream IV and V to comply with new communications mandates. The upgrade solution was designed to be cost-effective and swift to install.

KaiserAir is expecting the STC to be awarded around 100 days after the program’s inception, having performed ground and flight-testing in August.

Air-charter operator Solairus has announced an air-charter membership club known as “Altitude.” The company, headquartered in the San Francisco Bay area, has built a sizeable business in aircraft management, operating from more than 40 locations across the U.S. and employing more than 400 flight and support personnel. Its managed fleet has more than 70 aircraft.

Starting January 1 next year Jet Aviation will add an FBO in the Bahamas to its global network. During the NBAA show the business aviation services company signed a management agreement with Executive Flight Support (EFS), based at Lynden Pindling International Airport at Nassau, the primary gateway to the Bahamas.

Pratt & Whitney Canada lifted the veil on its 16,000-pound-class PW800 engine, which has been selected to power the new Gulfstream G500 and G600 large-cabin business jets, thus finding a new application for its PurePower family. The engine manufacturer said that the PurePower engine brings major improvements in fuel burn and maintainability. The program is well advanced, as certification of the new turbofan is expected by year-end.

While most of the news about Pratt & Whitney Canada at NBAA 2014 included the terms “PW800” and “Gulfstream,” the Longueil, Canada engine maker also highlighted some impressive achievements among its legacy offerings. Since its entry into service on Cessna’s Citation Sovereign in 2004, the PW306C has surpassed two million flying hours, contributing to the more than 13 million flight hours accumulated throughout the PW300 engine family.
