London Biggin Hill-based ACE Services has obtained EASA Part 66 B2/C certification approval on the Bombardier Global Express. “We are delighted to provide engineering expertise to match our existing Camo approval on the Bombardier product,” director Lee Westwick said. The MRO also provides avionics expertise using its EASA B2/C licensed engineer for scheduled and unscheduled events.

King Aerospace Commercial, a refurbishment and modification center for large private jets with facilities in Ardmore, Okla., and Dallas, has been awarded a paint contract for a green Boeing Business Jet. The assignment–a subcontract from Aeria Luxury Interiors of San Antonio, Texas–will involve four silver and blue pearl paints as well as multiple nose-to-tail geometric design elements.

Hawker Pacific will partner with Aero Dynamix to create an additional Aero Dynamix international repair station. The repair facility for night vision imaging systems (NVIS) will be an extension of Hawker Pacific’s existing avionics repair facility in Dubai. Drawing on 35 years of experience, the Middle East facility offers maintenance, modification and support services. Aero Dynamix develops integrated NVIS for both commercial and military aircraft. The company specializes in complete and fully integrated cockpit modifications for night-vision applications.

Gallisath has more than 25 years’ experience providing product support to corporate aviation operations and maintenance facilities in the North Central Region of the U.S. He spent more than 20 years at Raytheon Aircraft Services in various sales and managerial roles during his time with the airframe OEM in aftermarket support.

AAR has secured multiple contracts for work to be done at its newest maintenance, repair and overhaul facility in Lake Charles, La. These contracts, including agreements with two major U.S. carriers, represent a milestone for the repair station, which began operations at this location a year ago. With these commitments, AAR’s Lake Charles MRO has begun supporting a customer mix of major U.S. carriers, leasing institutions and private operators covering widebodies such as the Airbus A330 and A340 and Boeing 767 and 777.

Making his first appearance at an European Regions Airline Association conference since assuming the top executive spot from the outgoing Filippo Bagnato, new ATR CEO Patrick de Castelbajac issued a predictably upbeat assessment of his company’s performance of late during a press briefing in Barcelona on October 1. Now holding, by its reckoning, an 80-percent share of the 70- to 80-seat turboprop airliner market, ATR expects a renewed emphasis on Europe following its encouraging sales over the past few years in Asia, whose operators now fly the highest numbers of the Franco-Italian turboprops of any region in the world.

Slovenia’s Adria Airways has seen a 20-percent decline in traffic on its Ljubljana-Moscow route due largely to the geopolitical upheaval in Eastern Europe. Now flying a pair of Airbus A319s, a single A320, six Bombardier CRJ900s and two CRJ200s, the airline expects a 10-percent increase in passenger traffic this year throughout its network. Unfortunately for CEO Mark Anzur, the airline’s only route into Russia has seen a precipitous decline since soon after the annexation of Crimea in March 2014.

One of the things we talk about in the Current Topics in Aviation course I co-teach at Vaughn College of Aeronautics is how to report safety issues without being labeled a whistleblower or, worse, being fired. It’s an important issue for anyone entering a field where safety is so important and the “penalties” for being labeled a whistleblower can be high. Even the federal Whistleblower Protection Act covers only a small segment of the industry: airlines and their contractors. Some states might also have some protections for workers.

It could have happened to any two professional pilots flying a nonprecision approach, in darkness, into weather that turned out to be worse than they expected after a night of back-side-of-the-clock flying. But the NTSB’s September 9 hearing into the Aug. 14, 2013 crash of UPS Flight 1354, an Airbus A300-600, on approach to Birmingham, Ala. (BHM), proved that even crews flying heavy jets can lose situational awareness and get just as far behind on nonprecision approach as King Air crews, especially when a handful of other factors also come into play.
