Organizers of the annual Latin American Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (LABACE) are working fast to put together this year’s show, to be staged at São Paulo Congonhas Airport (August 12-14). Exhibit space sales opened on May 27, and the drawing to assign specific booth locations to exhibiting companies followed on June 10. Last year’s event drew 180 exhibitors, with 68 aircraft on static display.

For a minute, I think I am in the wrong place.

The Enstrom Helicopter headquarters I visited in Menominee, Mich., more than a decade ago was a ramshackle collection of small, rundown hangars and older low-ceiling buildings. The dated offices had furnishings stuck in the 1960s. There were plenty of empty parking spaces, few employees and the company was perennially beset by rumors of its impending demise.

OH-58D Kiowa Warrior mast-mounted sight

DRS Technologies, a Finmeccanica-owned U.S. defense contractor, has supported the distinctive sensor ball that sits atop the U.S. Army’s OH-58D Kiowa Warrior since 1998. Technology updates the company has developed will make the electro-optical targeting system known as the mast-mounted sight (MMS) more lethal and better protect Kiowa Warrior crews—if only the Army continues investing in the long-serving scout helicopter.

An FAA Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) is the first stage of a process that could impose drug and alcohol (D&A) testing requirements on aviation maintenance providers around the globe, and the Aeronautical Repair Station Association (ARSA) intends for international stakeholders to have a voice in the matter. Congress mandated that any foreign D&A testing requirement be “consistent with the applicable laws” of the country where the repair station is located.

Peterborough, Ontario-based Flying Colours has received approval from the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) to work on business aircraft registered in the State of Qatar. The MRO will provide a range of regular and line maintenance work on business jets originating from the Middle East. QCAA status enables the MRO to undertake continuing airworthiness and maintenance work on aircraft including all those under its Transport Canada Civil Aviation approval (the Bombardier Challenger and Global series and the Dassault Falcon series).

Hawker Pacific Aerospace has opened its new 12,000-sq-ft airframe-related component (ARC) shop in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The move broadens the landing gear specialist’s expertise to include services for thrust reversers. The facility, which has already received its first five thrust reverser units, serves as the hub of thrust reverser services for Lufthansa Technik’s customers within the Americas.

Rockwell Collins has received FAA certification for its Pro Line 21 integrated display system (IDS) retrofit solution for Pro Line II-equipped Hawker 800As. The retrofit brings Hawker 800 owners modern flight deck capabilities with the same displays found on the Hawker 900XP and 850XP.

Jet Aviation Dubai recently redelivered its first successful controller pilot datalink communications and automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast out upgrade on a Gulfstream G550 for an undisclosed customer in the region. “This particular upgrade was technologically challenging and logistically complicated,” said Wajahat Ali Khan, director of safety and maintenance at Jet Aviation Dubai.
