Saab has been steadily building its airborne ISR portfolio and hopes to secure its first deal in the maritime surveillance/patrol market in the near future. Saab has two offerings in this sector: the Saab 340 MSA (maritime surveillance aircraft), for which the company has produced a demonstrator that was on show at Farnborough; and the larger and more capable Swordfish. Saab has been keeping the UK aware of its developments in this field, although any formal requirement for a UK maritime patrol aircraft is not expected until after a strategic defense review next year.

The 2014 Farnborough airshow will be remembered for the airplane that didn’t show. The much-anticipated international debut of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter was stymied by the engine fire that later led to a three-week grounding.

Second-quarter revenues at Textron Aviation, which includes Cessna and Beechcraft, climbed $623 million year-over-year, to $1.18 billion, reflecting the Beechcraft acquisition in late March and higher jet deliveries. Textron Aviation delivered 70 turbine business aircraft during the quarter–36 Cessna Citations and 34 Beechcraft Kings Airs, up from 20 jets and 14 King Air turboprops in the same period last year.

Piaggio Aero announced the first major order for its Avanti EVO this week at the Farnborough International Airshow, with Hong Kong-based Bravia Capital signing an order for 10 aircraft with options for another 40. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of next year. The aircraft will operate in the U.S., primarily in what Bravia CEO Bharat Bhise described as the “up to three-hour” market sector.

Miami, Fla.-based World Fuel Services (WFS) bolstered its general aviation offerings, having signed an agreement to purchase contract fuel and international trip planning provider Colt International. Colt, founded in 1999, serves 5,700 flight departments.

Royal Jet, Abu Dhabi’s luxury air charter operator, postponed its major fleet-replacement orders until the second half of the year after a board meeting last month. However, the company hopes an eventual delivery schedule will not be affected by this delay.

Textron Aviation’s flagship Cessna Citation X+ landed Saturday at TAG Farnborough Airport after a short flight from Paris Le Bourget. On Friday, the X+ crossed the Atlantic for the first time, flying 2,788 nm from Presque Isle, Maine, to Paris in five hours 33 minutes, averaging 502 knots groundspeed and burning 10,600 pounds of fuel.

The Garmin Pilot iOS aviation app–which provides flight-planning capabilities, comprehensive weather information and navigation–now has worldwide coverage, Garmin announced today. Pilots also have access to expanded coverage of European charts in a single application, including geo-referenced FliteCharts and SafeTaxi airport diagrams. New features also include FastFind and Smart Airspace, which offer users more efficient flight planning, quick waypoint entry and intuitive airspace navigation.

Amelia Rose Earhart completed an around-the-world flight in a Pilatus PC-12 NG earlier this week, becoming the youngest female, at 31, to fly around the world in a single-engine aircraft. Landing at Oakland (Calif). International Airport, Amelia Rose Earhart returned to her flight origin and “closed the flight plan” of the original Amelia Mary Earhart.
