Another sign of what Embraer CEO Frederico Curado has characterized as a resurgent regional jet market appeared last week, when United Airlines inked a firm order for 30 of the Brazilian manufacturer’s E175s. The deal, which includes options on another 40 of the 76-seat airplanes, marks the first move by United to exploit its newfound freedom to alter the composition of its regional jet network since its pilots agreed to relax the scope clause in their labor contract last December.

CFM Freezes Design of Leap-1B Engine for 737 Max

CFM International last week froze the design of the Leap engine variant destined to power Boeing’s new 737 Max narrowbody. The Snecma-GE joint venture has said it expects to achieve the first full engine test of the Leap-1B in the middle of next year, followed by initial flight-testing in 2015 and powerplant certification in 2016. Boeing expects the 737 Max to enter service in 2017.

This year’s RAA Convention virtually coincides with the introduction of Tuscon, Arizona-based Universal Avionics’s new FlexPerf trip performance module, on display this week in the Montreal Convention Center. Designed to provide “advanced” fuel savings predictions for aircraft performance during climb, cruise and descent, the system works with Universal’s Waas/SBAS flight management system (FMS) and multi-mission management system (MMMS).

Wichita, Kansas-based wire harness maker Global Aviation Technologies has introduced a new annunciator replacement panel for the de Havilland Dash 8 turboprop, the company announced here at the RAA Convention. A so-called “plug and play” modification, GAT’s new panel replaces and combines the current Honeywell-Grimes caution advisory panel (Part Number 80-5035-XX) and warning annunciator panels (Part Number 75-0434-X) for the Dash 8-100, -200 and -300, cutting in half the number of LRUs operators need to stock.

Helicopter Buffalo Herding OK With Judge

A federal judge has allowed buffalo herding by helicopter, in response to a lawsuit filed by an environmentalist group that had obtained a restraining order against such operations in Yellowstone National Park last year, alleging the practice adversely affects grizzly bears. Helicopters have been used for more than a decade to steer wandering bison back into Yellowstone each spring.

Police Helicopters Temporarily Grounded
