The business jet market has been on the mend for quite some time, but only recently has the improvement shown clear signs of acceleration. According to recent statistics, it was about one year ago that the inventory of used business jets began to shrink at a faster rate than during previous years. Since last year’s NBAA Convention, the industry has experienced a 10-percent drop in used aircraft inventory, or nearly 300 fewer aircraft.

Fifty-four percent of ultraviolet radiation will penetrate most aircraft windshields, according to Dr. Elizabeth Hale, a spokeswoman for the New York City-based Skin Cancer Foundation. Hale offered this insight along with a number of others to create awareness about the dangers of cancer to cockpit flight crews.

Sunscreen is a must, even in the air,” Hale said in a foundation news release. “It’s critical that pilots adequately protect their exposed skin, including hands and faces, with at least an SPF 30 broad spectrum sunscreen.”

NBAA will recognize five member companies for outstanding safe flying achievement at a luncheon tomorrow. PepsiCo and Weyerhaeuser will each receive the NBAA award for 60 years of safe flying, while Brunswick, Cummins and Sprint Flight Operations will receive the 50 years of safe flying award. The plaques will be awarded at the association’s Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA2014) in Orlando, Fla.

The Helicopter Association International will look at operational and flight safety issues faced by aerial firefighters and provide an overview of the upcoming 2015 fire season next month (November 17 to 19) at its firefighting safety conference in Boise, Idaho. The conference includes an interagency briefing with the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service. Attendance is free but advanced registration is required.

New York resident John Michael Dial was sentenced on October 2 in U.S. District Court, Sacramento, Calif., to two years incarceration and 12 months of supervised release for operating a helicopter without a valid pilot certificate, as well as for operating under a false identity. A federal investigation revealed that from Dec. 16, 2009, to Aug. 4, 2010, Dial operated news helicopters in the San Francisco area under a false identity.
