Superior Air Parts and Christiansen Aviation have agreed to develop a supplemental type certificate (STC) to install Superior’s 180-hp Vantage engine on later-model Cessna 172R and -S models. A Skyhawk SV equipped with a mockup of the Vantage is on display at the Superior Air Parts AirVenture booth (No. 257).

Avidyne IFD540

On the eve of AirVenture 2014, Avidyne announced the long-awaited FAA certification of the touchscreen IFD540 FMS/GPS/navcom. Not only did Avidyne gain FAA technical standard order (TSO) certification, but also an approved model list supplemental type certificate (AML-STC) that allows for installation of the IFD540 in more than 1,000 aircraft makes and models.

Connext

On the eve of EAA AirVenture 2014, Garmin unveiled a major software upgrade to its GTN series navigators, new devices for the Connext wireless cockpit communications system, a new WireAware wire-strike avoidance feature for obstacle databases and new seven-inch touchscreen displays in the G3X experimental avionics line. All are being demonstrated at the Garmin exhibit (Booth 4089, Hangar D).

SafeFlight AoA sensor

Safe Flight invented the stall warning horn in 1946, and refined the concept with its “lift transducer” beginning in 1953. Now the company is at EAA AirVenture 2014 with a new product–the SCx Leading Edge AoA (angle of attack) indicator. It’s priced to be competitive with other AoA indicators, especially considering its $200 show discount. AirVenture buyers will pay $1,295 when they buy a system at the Safe Flight booth (No. 18). The regular price is still-attractive at $1,495.

Flight training provider King Schools, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, launched its second Alaskan Flying Adventure Sweepstakes today at EAA AirVenture 2014 in Oshkosh, Wis. Husband and wife training legends John and Martha King kicked off the contest, the winner of which will receive an Alaskan flying vacation for two valued at approximately $9,500, including a bush flying course and a chance to earn an add-on seaplane rating.

Amelia Rose Earhardt, the pilot who earlier this month completed her namesake’s failed around the world attempt, will be a special guest of Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) this week at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis. Sponsored by P&WC, the present-day Earhardt flew a Pilatus PC-12NG turboprop, powered by the manufacturer’s PT-6 engine, more than 24,000 miles in 16 days, recreating the infamous 1937 global circumnavigation during which Amelia Earhardt and her navigator Fred Noonan disappeared.

New AirVenture exhibitor Aero Glass (Hangar A, Booth 1110) is developing an augmented reality environment that will allow pilots to “see” terrain, navigation, ADS-B traffic, weather and airspace constraints on wearable devices such as Google Glass, Epson Moverio and other head-mounted type displays. The company is seeking beta testers to help refine the software’s features. The first 200 to sign up will receive a lifetime license for the Aero Glass program; the company also is offering special discounts on the devices during the show.

On the eve of EAA AirVenture 2014, aviation analyst Brian Foley released summaries of two key areas affecting the general aviation industry: investment capital and engine technology.

On the capital front, Foley said that there is no shortage of investors who are willing to put money into general aviation companies. However, there is a shortage of what these investors are seeking–entities that actually make money, that is, “a good $20 million in annual revenues and $5 million in profits known as Ebitda [earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization].

Solar-powered aircraft could offer a low-cost way to train future pilots, if the partners developing the Sun Flyer succeed in their ambitious plans. A technology demonstrator–a PC-Aero Elektra One–for the Sun Flyer solar-powered airplane made its first flight earlier this month in Munich, Germany, and can be seen at EAA AirVenture 2014 at the Redbird Flight Simulations display (Booth 320). While the Elektra One technology demonstrator didn’t fly with solar panels, the panels will be installed on the Elektra that is on display at AirVenture.
