Experimental aircraft manufacturer Sonex Aircraft introduced its AeroVee Turbo engine and announced new details on its in-development SubSonex personal jet during the company’s annual EAA AirVenture open house, held yesterday at its headquarters, which are adjacent to Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wis. The Turbo boosts the power of the standard AeroVee engine from 80 hp to 100 hp.

Thales announced that its Scorpion helmet-mounted sight and display system (HMSD) had been selected for all new weapons systems sales and upgrades by Airbus Helicopters. The unusual sole-source selection had been made “following a full and open competition,” Thales said. The Airbus Helicopters military product line that could be sold with the HMSD consists of seven helicopters.

Superior Air Parts and Christiansen Aviation have agreed to develop a supplemental type certificate (STC) to install Superior’s 180-hp Vantage engine on later-model Cessna 172R and -S models. A Skyhawk SV equipped with a mockup of the Vantage is on display at the Superior Air Parts AirVenture booth (No. 257).

Avidyne IFD540

On the eve of AirVenture 2014, Avidyne announced the long-awaited FAA certification of the touchscreen IFD540 FMS/GPS/navcom. Not only did Avidyne gain FAA technical standard order (TSO) certification, but also an approved model list supplemental type certificate (AML-STC) that allows for installation of the IFD540 in more than 1,000 aircraft makes and models.

On the eve of EAA AirVenture 2014, Garmin unveiled a major software upgrade to its GTN series navigators, new devices for the Connext wireless cockpit communications system, a new WireAware wire-strike avoidance feature for obstacle databases and new seven-inch touchscreen displays in the G3X experimental avionics line. All are being demonstrated at the Garmin exhibit (Booth 4089, Hangar D).
