Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group (Chalet C26) is developing an external auxiliary fuel tank for the Bombardier Q400 turboprop, providing an extra 10,000 pounds of fuel in two external pannier tanks. This extra capacity raises the Q400’s endurance up to 12 hours, which could be useful for a range of missions.

Bombardier will offer the tanks as an official option on the Q400, which has been selected as the platform for a number of maritime patrol and other special-mission proposals.

Aircraft support specialist AJW Aviation (Outdoor Exhibit 10) has been chosen by Air Serbia to provide a five-year, hourly cost maintenance service to supply spares for its Airbus narrow-body fleet. The contract covers seven Airbus A319s and two A320s.

AJW Aviation is building a network of support hubs in Eastern Europe to provide greater support and minimize AOG situations, although a 24/7 AOG service is also provided.

Boeing’s new 777X features an advanced fly-by-wire flight control system that will be powered by BAE Systems electronics. The system is called the Integrated Flight Control Electronics and Air Data Reference Function, and not only controls the 777X’s flight surfaces, but also adds further functionality, such as load alleviation, high lift and folding wingtips.

Airbus has joined the Virginia’s Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM), an industry, academic and government consortium dedicated to manufacturing breakthroughs and advancements in applied research, the two parties announced yesterday at the show.

Governor Terry McAuliffe of Virginia appeared with Charles Champion, Airbus executive vice president of engineering, and several other consortium and Airbus officials at a signing event at the Airbus chalet.

Israel’s Elbit Systems (Hall 1 Stand C14) and Nicarnica Aviation of Norway signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the Farnborough International Airshow yesterday to implement Nicarnica’s volcanic ash detection technology into Elbit’s enhanced vision system (EVS) cameras on commercial aircraft. The combination will help pilots avoid flying into contaminated areas while still maintaining safe operation in areas affected by volcanic eruptions.

The Acclimate ignition system features solid-state electronics, with exciter performance that can vary depending on specific combustion and environmental requirements, according to Unison. This helps optimize ignition performance and overall system life, the company added.

With four maritime surveillance aircraft (MSA) in the static park at this week’s Farnborough Air Show, and much talk about British requirements in the chalets, it might seem that the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is about to take action to rectify its most glaring “capability gap.” But British defence procurement minister Philip Dunne told journalists at the show on Wednesday that no decision to reconstitute the capability will be taken until after next year’s strategic defense review.

Switzerland’s Ruag Aviation (Hall 4 Stand E3/4) has entered into an agreement with Tata Advanced Systems (Hall 1 Stand B13) under which the Indian company will provide fully assembled fuselages and wings for the Do 228-212NG aircraft from its Hyderabad factory.

Tata is a leader in the Indian aerostructures sector, and holds a number of certifications, such as AS9100, Nadcap and ISO 14000.
